CDs of Weill, William Schuman, and Copland Make Best of 2005 List

Three Naxos CDs made the editor’s list of the best classical recordings in 2005.  Here they are, and here’s what the editorial reviewers had to say about them:

KURT WEILL (1900-1950): Symphony No. 1; Symphony No. 2; Lady in the Dark: Symphonic Nocturne (concert suite arranged by Robert Russell Bennett)

Marin Alsop, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

"Performed with great energy and purpose by an excellent conductor and orchestra, vividly recorded, at a price which encourages exploration." -- Leslie Gerber

WILLIAM SCHUMAN: Symphonies Nos. 4 and 9; Orchestra Song, Circus Overture
Gerard Schwarz, Seattle Symphony

"Schwarz and his orchestra deliver stylishly apt performances of all these works, making one look forward to the rest of the series." -- Dan Davis

AARON COPLAND: Solo Piano Music

Banjamin Pasternack, piano

"A riveting, intense performance, more austere and thus grander than any since the composer's own magnificent version from 78s . . . The recorded sound is excellent and so are the program notes." -- Leslie Gerber
