José Serebrier Records Third Volume of Ned Rorem Works
From August 30 to 31, José Serebrier and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra recorded a new CD with two concertos of the American composer Ned Rorem. Both are world-premiere recordings: his Piano Concerto No. 2 from 1950, and the Cello Concerto written in 2003. The piano soloist is Simon Mulligan, and cello soloist is Wen-sing Yang, both making their Naxos debut. The concertos, written over 50 years apart, are a pivotal part of Rorem's oeuvre.
Naxos has recently released the second CD in the Rorem/Serebrier series, with the Violin Concerto performed by Philippe Quint and the world premiere recording of the Flute Concerto played by Jeffrey Khaner, with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic conducted by José Serebrier. This CD also includes the world premiere recording of Rorem's orchestral work "Pilgrims", which has captured the critics' imagination.
The composer Ned Rorem, conductor José Serebrier, soprano Carole Farley (who stars with Serebrier in a new DVD with works of Poulenc and Menotti), violinist Philippe Quint and flutist Jeffrey Khaner appeared for a discussion on contemporary American music on 11 September at the Lincoln Triangle branch of Barnes and Nobles in Manhattan, NY.
