World Première of Maxwell Davies’s Naxos Quartet No.9

On Wednesday 18 October, the Maggini Quartet will perform the world première of Peter Maxwell Davies’s Naxos Quartet No.9 at Wigmore Hall, London. The concert begins at 7.30pm.

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies was commissioned by Naxos to write ten string quartets over a period of five years. These works, known as the Naxos Quartets, will all be premiered and widely performed by the Maggini Quartet and then recorded by them for release by Naxos. On 23rd October 2002 at Wigmore Hall, the Maggini Quartet performed the first Naxos Quartet.

"I have long wanted to write a series of string quartets but somehow was always preoccupied with other commissions. I am delighted to have the opportunity to write the Naxos Quartets for the Maggini, as I regard this as the most challenging musical form and the most suitable and precise kind of music-making for a composer at this stage of his life."  Sir Peter Maxwell Davies
