NAXOS EARNS 14 GRAMMY AWARD NOMINATIONS

Naxos' American Classics, British Music, and
Milken Archive CDs well-represented
Naxos Audio Books receives its first-ever nomination
Milken Archive of American Jewish Music also recognized

National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) honored Naxos, the leading independent classical music label, today with 14 GRAMMY Award nominations, the most ever for the company.  Naxos itself picked up six nominations, as did its Milken Archive of American Jewish Music.  Naxos Audio Books and Marco Polo earned one nomination each.

The Naxos CD of Elliott Carter’s Symphony No. 1 and Piano Concerto with Kenneth Schermerhorn (conductor), Mark Wait (piano), and the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, part of the much-celebrated American Classics series, was put on the short list for Best Classical Album and Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (with Orchestra).  Naxos’s long-standing commitment to British Music also yielded significant GRAMMY attention.  David Lloyd-Jones and the Royal Scottish National Symphony Orchestra were recognized for their recording of Arnold Bax’s Symphony No. 7 and Tinagel, nominated for Best Orchestral Performance, while their work with pianist Peter Donohoe on the Arthur Bliss Piano Concerto is up for Best Instrumental Soloist with Orchestra.  The Maggini Quartet, heard most recently on Naxos’ Peter Maxwell Davies Naxos Quartets CD, received a nomination for Best Chamber Music Performance on their recording of Frank Bridge’s String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2.

For the first time, a Naxos Audio Book was nominated: The Story of Classical Music narrated by Marin Alsop and written by Darren Henley was selected for the Best Spoken Word Album category.

The Milken Archive of American Jewish Musicalso received nominations for their disc of music by Yehudi Wyner, part of the Milken Archive of American Jewish Music.  David Frost was nominated for his work on the Wyner disc as well as a number of other Milken Archive CDs.

Other nominees include Penderecki’s St. Luke Passion with Antoni Wit, the Warsaw National Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra, and various soloists; and the Marco Polo release of Korngold’s music for the film The Adventures of Robin Hood.
