Lully: Armide

8.660209-10 Lully: Armide
Opera Lafayette • Ryan Brown

Armide, Jean-Baptiste Lully’s last complete tragédie en musique and the last work he wrote in collaboration with librettist Philippe Quinault, was an instant and enduring success; a crowd-pleaser at its premiere and a perennial favourite ever since.

8.570295 Karlowicz: Symphonic Poems, Vol 2
New Zealand Symphony Orchestra • Antoni Wit

Mieczysław Karłowicz’s six lushly-scored symphonic poems make him one of the outstanding Polish composers of his generation. The first, second and fifth of these masterpieces are included on this second volume. Volume 1 is available on Naxos 8.570452.
Corigliano: Dylan Thomas Trilogy

8.559394 Corigliano: Dylan Thomas Trilogy
Sir Thomas Allen, baritone Ty Jackson, boy soprano John Tessier, Tenor Nashville Symphony Chorus (Chorus Director: George Mabry) Nashville Symphony Orchestra Leonard Slatkin

One of the most highly awarded and most popular American composers working today, John Corigliano writes music of extraordinary beauty. On this album equally acclaimed performers interpret his settings of Dylan Thomas’s poetry. Other fine Corigliano titles are also available.

8.572022 Wiseman: Different Voices
Hayley Westenra, solo voice Stephen Fry, narrator Royal Philharmonic Orchestra • Debbie Wiseman

“I conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the first live performance at London’s Cadogan Hall with Hayley Westenra adding her special touch to the song and Stephen Fry narrating in his own inimitable fashion. The result of that live performance is this CD.” – Debbie Wiseman

8.557078 Schumann: Frauneliebe und Leben
Sibylla Rubens, soprano • Uta Hielscher, piano

This fifth disc in the Naxos series of the complete Schumann Lieder features one of the key works of the entire 19th century song repertoire, Frauenliebe und -leben (A Woman’s Love and Life), one of Schumann’s most popular works.

Villa-Lobos: Piano Music, Vol. 7

8.570503 Villa-Lobos: Piano Music, Vol 7
Sonia Rubinsky, piano

Heitor Villa-Lobos’s multilayered idiom is as exuberant as the Brazilian landscape that inspired him so often. Several of the shorter pieces on this disc exist only in manuscript, and here receive their world premiere recording.

Bottesini: Chamber and Vocal Works

8.570399 Bottesini: Chamber and Vocal Works
Thomas Martin, double bass Anthony Halstead, piano Jacquelyn Fugelle, soprano

Giovanni Bottesini enjoyed a globe-trotting career as “the Paganini of the double bass” but was also an accomplished and respected conductor in Europe. This recording includes the song Une bouche aimée with double bass obbligato.

8.570472-73  D'Anglebert: Suites for Harpsichord
Elizabeth Farr

A colleague and friend of Lully, Jean-Henry D’Anglebert served as claveciniste in the court of Louis XIV, the Sun King. His music is intricately sophisticated and serenely beautiful, with four suites played here on the lute and the lute-harpsichord.

8.572097 Hill: String Quartets Nos 4, 6 & 8
Dominion Quartet Yury Gezentsvey Rosemary Harris David Pucher, violins Donald Maurice, viola • David Chickering, cello

While Hill’s first three string quartets (Naxos 8.570491) are reminiscent of Dvořák and Tchaikovsky, these three chart a new course. Hill’s trademark slow movements remain a feature, with the outer movements offering memorable melodies and much finesse.
