8.669022-24 ADAMS Nixon in China
Robert Orth (Richard Nixon) • Maria Kanyova (Pat Nixon)
Thomas Hammons (Henry Kissinger) • Marc Heller (Mao Tse-tung)
Tracy Dahl (Madame Mao [Chiang Ch’ing]) • Chen-Ye Yuan (Chou En-lai) Melissa Malde (1st Secretary [Nancy T’ang]) • Julie Simson (2nd Secretary) Jennifer DeDominici (3rd Secretary) • Opera Colorado Chorus
Colorado Symphony Orchestra • Marin Alsop, conductor
A longtime collaborator of John Adams and champion of his music, Marin Alsop directs this live recording of Opera Colorado’s 25th Anniversary Celebration production of Nixon in China, presented at Denver’s new Ellie Caulkins Opera House during the 2008 National Performing Arts Convention, and featuring an internationally recognized cast. Alice Goodman’s epic libretto and John Adams’s distinctive music weave together a colorful fabric of actual events from President Nixon’s historic visit to the People’s Republic of China with intimate examinations of the opera’s real life characters. The spectacle, drama, humor and pathos of this masterpiece remain as compelling today as when the opera was premiered in 1987. |

8.571262 BEETHOVEN Piano Sonatas Vol 6 - Nos 4, 8 & 27 (Biret Beethoven Edition Vol 12)
Idil Biret, piano
‘Biret grasps the size of Beethoven’s style. The polyphony is laid out in a relaxed way with little indulgence in point making. She keeps the big line and yet is thankfully sparing in her use of fortissimos. The piano tone is sumptuous. Biret’s gentle and almost sensuous sonorities are really captivating. One is reminded that her mentor has been Wilhelm Kempff.’ (Gramophone)
‘Idil Biret gives an impressive performance. A supreme mastery of tempi, sonorities, polyphony and technique permits Biret - a disciple of Alfred Cortot - to embrace all the moods of Beethoven and gives her playing a symphonic depth rarely heard until now.’ (Le Nouvel Observateur) |

8.504016 DOWLAND Complete Lute Music
Nigel North, lute
Arguably the finest recordings of Dowland’s much-loved lute music, Nigel North’s Dowland Lute Edition has gained him a garland of critical accolades: ‘A collector’s item’ The Times on Vol 1, (8.557586), ‘a remarkable performance of wonderful music’ (American Record Guide on Vol 2, 8.557862), ‘North’s sweet-toned playing is both unfailingly musical and highly imaginative’ (Gramophone on Vol 3, 8.570449), ‘Nigel North’s Dowland cycle sets a new benchmark’ (5 STARS, BBC Music Magazine), ‘Everything comes together for perfection.’ (MusicWeb International on Vol 4, 8.570284). Nigel North is one of the most highly respected lutenists today. |

8.572213 HINDEMITH Quartet for Clarinet and Piano Trio, Clarinet Sonata, 3 Leichte Stucke, Clarinet Quintet
Spectrum Concerts Berlin
The chamber music pieces on this disc show how richly satisfying Hindemith’s music can be. By turns passionate, deeply moving and humorous, each work which features the clarinet explores the wind instrument’s expressive potential, whether through lyrically arching melodies, passages of lilting innocence or fiery spirit. In the Three Easy Pieces for Cello and Piano Hindemith demonstrates mastery through restraint. Spectrum Concerts Berlin has also recorded two acclaimed discs of music by Hindemith’s contemporary and fellow exile Ernst Toch for Naxos (8.559324 and 8.559282). |

8.559653 HUANG Drama Theater Nos 2-4, String Quartet No 1 ‘The 3 Tenses’
Future In REverse (FIRE) • Min Xiao-fen, pipa & vocals
Huang Ruo, conductor
The release by Naxos of Huang Ruo’s Chamber Concertos Nos. 1–4 (8.559322) was hailed as ‘a bold debut’ (Gramophone) which ‘shows a major compositional voice emerging’ (The Juilliard Journal Online). This disc, also conducted by the composer, presents three of his Drama Theaters for various combinations of Eastern and Western instruments – including 18 beer bottles – the elusive subtitle of each strikingly suggesting a musical/cultural/philosophical idea. Similarly, The Three Tenses explores a paradoxically integrated notion of time, where past, present and future create ‘a seamless entity called timelessness’. Huang Ruo won the 2008 International Composition Prize of the Luxembourg Society for Contemporary Music and has been cited by the New Yorker as ‘one of the most intriguing of the new crop of Asian-American composers.’ |

|
8.559370 IVES Holidays Symphony (excerpts), The General Slocum, Overture in G minor
Malmö Symphony Orchestra & Chamber Chorus • James Sinclair, conductor
When asked to define a masterpiece in music, Stravinsky chose Ives’s Decoration Day, a tone poem that Ives later made the second movement of his Holidays Symphony (its first movement, Washington’s Birthday, is available on Naxos 8.559087). The remaining movements also celebrate key American holidays with characteristic verve. The General Slocum movingly commemorates a 1904 boating disaster in which more than a thousand people lost their lives. The Overture and Postlude are early works that nonetheless display Ives’s originality, while Yale- Princeton Football Game exuberantly depicts a legendary 1897 match. |

8.570991 JOACHIM Violin Concerto Op 11 ‘In the Hungarian Style’, Violin Concerto in G minor Op 3
Suyoen Kim, violin • Staatskapelle Weimar • Michael Halasz, conductor
A colleague of Mendelssohn, the Schumanns and Brahms, the virtuoso violinist Joseph Joachim was himself a composer of note. His exuberant single-movement Opus 3 Violin Concerto from around 1851 was dedicated to Liszt, from whom he subsequently distanced himself. It is a tour de force by a highly gifted twenty year old. The Opus 11 Violin Concerto followed six years later, its Classical three movements frequently coloured by Hungarian inflections, most strikingly in the ‘gypsy finale’ which calls for astonishing technical control, immense stamina and fiery abandon from the soloist. Suyoen Kim is the Winner of the 2006 Hannover International Violin Competition. |

8.559304 LAURIDSEN Choral Works
Elora Festival Singers • Leslie De’Ath, piano • Noel Edison, conductor
Morten Lauridsen is America’s preeminent composer of choral music. Characterized by long, arching and highly expressive lines, his works are enjoyed by performers and audiences worldwide. O nata lux, perhaps Lauridsen’s most popular work, is a serene evocation of heavenly light, while the searingly intense and technically demanding Madrigali inhabit a more feverish and earthy realm. The refined Les Chansons des Roses employ a design reminiscent of the formal gardens, filled with roses, found in the grounds of the great French châteaux. The unforgettable final movement is the now-famous Dirait-on. The Mid-Winter Songs for chorus and piano are a stunning example of compositional virtuosity. O magnum mysterium, for a cappella chorus, is a setting of a Christmas text that has inspired composers from Victoria to Poulenc. |

8.505225 MAXWELL DAVIES Naxos Quartets Nos 1-10 (5-CD Box Set)
Maggini Quartet
Peter Maxwell Davies is universally acknowledged as one of the foremost composers of our time, and is currently Master of the Queen’s Music. His musical idiom has been described by The New York Times as a combination of ‘medieval mysticism, modernist rigour and happy accessibility’. Maxwell Davies’s 10-quartet cycle commissioned by Naxos is now collected in this 5-CD boxed set. The composer has written of Quartet No 10, ‘in no way must this be a last quartet. I needed to leave the door open: I had enjoyed writing the Naxos Quartets so much, and perhaps even learned a thing or two, that more could, in theory, eventually flourish’.‘The Maggini perform with the no-holds-barred commitment and jaw-dropping technical acumen we have come to expect from them throughout this massive project.’ (Gramophone) ‘Peter Maxwell Davies’s Naxos Quartet cycle, now complete on disc, make a hugely varied sequence in mood, manner, scale and inspiration’ (The Guardian) |

8.572161 MENDELSSOHN Magnificat / BACH Magnificat BWV 243
Yale Schola Cantorum • Yale Voxtet • Yale Collegium Players
Simon Carrington, conductor
J.S. Bach’s famous Magnificat and that of his son Carl Philipp Emanuel were the templates for the teenage Mendelssohn’s first major work for soloists, chorus and full orchestra, a brilliant setting of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s song of praise, composed in 1822, floridly Baroque in conception and similar in scale to the Bach settings. His Ave Maria of 1830 again evokes Baroque splendour, but also points towards his later oratorios, Paulus and Elijah. |

8.572174 MESSIAEN Poemes pour Mi, Les offrandes Oubliees, Un sourire
Anne Schwanewilms, soprano • Orchestre National de Lyon
Jun Maerkl, conductor
Love and faith, mortality and eternity are the abiding themes of these three important and beautifully shimmering works by one of the 20th century’s most innovative composers. Les offrandes oubliees, Messiaen’s first published orchestral work, is a symphonic meditation on Christ’s loving sacrifice to redeem the sin of humanity. Poemes pour Mi sets nine mystical texts which were written as highly personal love songs to his first wife, Claire Delbos, while Un sourire pays homage to what he saw as Mozart’s ever-smiling attitude to life’s many hardships. |
|
|
8.572298 MILHAUD Alissa, L'Amour Chante, Poemes Juifs
Carole Farley, soprano • John Constable, piano
One of Milhaud’s finest and most expressive later scores, L’Amour chante sets poems on the subject of love by various poets, making of each a ‘novel within a sigh’. In the Poemes juifs, whose anonymous texts Milhaud read in a magazine, the vocal line threads its way through myriad keys, creating subtle effects reminiscent of Faure or Debussy. Alissa, based on a novel by Andre Gide, completes this survey of the cream of Milhaud’s output for voice and piano. |

8.570948 OHANA Guitar Music - Tiento, Si le jour parait…, Cadran lunaire
Graham Anthony Devine, guitar
The guitar music of North African composer Maurice Ohana, though indebted to Spanish culture, is far removed from any stereotypical Iberian aspects and, with the exception of Tiento, was written for the ten-string guitar as played by Narciso Yepes. Inspired by the possibilities of this newly developed instrument, Ohana’s imagination created a unique, complex and highly inventive musical language which makes immense demands on both player and listener. The enigmatic Si le jour parait… is a seven-movement suite influenced by Debussy’s piano Preludes. Cadran lunaire (‘moon-dial’) juxtaposes ideas from classical antiquity, flamenco and traditional guitar music, conveyed through a rich variety of contrasts and moods. |

8.660224 REBEL/FRANCOEUR Zelindor Roi des Sylphes, Le Trophee Suite
The Opera Lafayette Orchestra and Chorus • Ryan Brown, conductor
First performed at Versailles in 1745, the opera ballet Zelindor is a delightful rococo pastorale which found favour with Louis XV’s mistress, Madame de Pompadour, no doubt because its story about a king who loves a commoner reflected her own situation. Opera Lafayette’s 2007 revival was hailed as ‘brilliant’ by The Washington Post, which praised the soloists, headed by Jean-Paul Fouchecourt, and chamber chorus who ‘sang with a gusto matched by the orchestra’s rhythmic pungency’. This is the work’s world premiere recording with full orchestra and chorus. |
|
|
8.572317 RUTTI Requiem
Olivia Robinson, soprano • Edward Price, baritone • The Bach Choir Southern Sinfonia • Jane Watts, organ • David Hill, conductor
Carl Rutti’s choral music is ‘sensuous and exuberant by turns, combining dazzling rhythms and soaring melodies with distinctively lush harmonies’ (Choir & Organ magazine). Of his Requiem, immense in scale yet often intimate in tone, the composer writes that ‘no words are strong enough to express the feelings of the bereaved, nor sufficient to explain what will await us after death. Music may be the most appropriate language’. Scored for soprano, baritone, double choir, strings, harp and organ, Rutti’s Requiem ultimately affirms life’s precious fragility. |

|
8.572191 SARASATE Violin and Orchestra Music Vol 1
Tianwa Yang, violin • Orquesta Sinfonica de Navarra
Ernest Martínez Izquierdo, conductor
Her recordings of Sarasate’s music for violin and piano (8.557767, 8.570192) have earned the young violinist Tianwa Yang praise for her ‘great polish and confidence’, American Record Guide describing her playing as ‘perfect’. This disc is her first volume of the Spanish virtuoso-composer’s music for violin and orchestra, a delightful survey of some of his most bewitching and demanding creations. Albert Spalding’s description of Sarasate’s playing could well apply to Tianwa Yang’s interpretations: ‘His violin sang like a thrush, and his incomparable ease tossed aside difficulties’. |

8.572167 SHOSTAKOVICH Symphonies Vol 2 - Symphonies Nos 5 & 9
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra • Vasily Petrenko, conductor
Following their electrifying account of Shostakovich’s Eleventh Symphony (8.572082), Vasily Petrenko and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra explore the profound ambivalences of the composer’s most performed symphony, the Fifth, written in 1937 at a time when he was under intense personal and political pressure from the authorities. The jaunty, neo-classical character of the Ninth Symphony (1945) prompted Shostakovich to remark that ‘musicians will like to play it, and critics will delight in blasting it’. Shostakovich’s startlingly different original draft for the opening of the Ninth’s first movement is available on 8.572138. |
|
|
8.559603 STILL Symphonies Nos 4 ‘Autochthonous’ & 5 ‘Western Hemisphere’, Poem
Fort Smith Symphony • John Jeter, conductor
Often referred to as the ‘dean of African-American composers’, William Grant Still received many honours for his pioneering music for the concert platform, film and television. Still’s most distinctive works use African-American forms such as the blues, spirituals and jazz within a neo-romantic idiom. He declared that his Fourth Symphony was ‘intended to represent the spirit of the American people’, an idée fixe unifying its four contrasting movements into an appealing whole. His triumphant Fifth Symphony celebrates ‘the sharing of resources and achievements’ which the composer saw as the key to America’s greatness. |

|
8.570895 STRAUSS Symphonia Domestica, Metamorphosen
Staatskapelle Weimar • Antoni Wit, conductor
Richard Strauss’s orchestral music includes several works with autobiographical significance, including Ein Heldenleben (Naxos 8.554417). Scored for large symphony orchestra, the Symphonia domestica depicts the delights and vicissitudes of married life with Strauss, his wife, child and other family members deftly portrayed in a variety of situations, including a ‘cheerful quarrel’ in which the father has the last word! In contrast, Metamorphosen for 23 solo strings is Strauss’s heartbreaking meditation on the destruction of German culture during World War II. |
|
|
8.557804 TANEYEV Violin Sonata, Piano Music
Ivan Peshkov, violin • Olga Solovieva, piano
Somewhat unusually for a pianist-composer of his calibre, Taneyev wrote few works for that instrument alone, although each establishes its own memorable mood. The Violin Sonata, subtitled ‘Of medium difficulty’, belongs to his mature compositional period and is notable for its blend of technical virtuosity and meditative inwardness. The Theme and Variations pays tribute to Taneyev’s teacher and colleague Tchaikovsky. Several of the solo piano pieces here receive their world premiere recordings. |

|
8.570497 TIPPETT String Quartets Vol 2 - Nos 3 & 5
The Tippett Quartet
Completing their acclaimed survey of Tippett’s string quartets, the young British quartet which has taken his name as their own here presents the composer’s Third and Fifth String Quartets. Both are infused with Tippett’s abiding fascination with Beethoven; the former work brimming with passionate counterpoint that recalls Beethoven’s late string quartets and piano sonatas, the latter harking back to Tippett’s earlier preoccupation with dramatic sonata principles. By turns dazzling, dynamic and lyrical, these are pivotal works of 20th-century chamber music. Volume 1 is available on 8.570496. |

8.572265 SEIZED BY SWEET DESIRE - Singing Nuns and Ladies, From the Cathedral to the Bed Chamber
Musica Ficta • Bo Holten, conductor
Until recently the role of women as composers and performers of both sacred and secular music during the Middle Ages has been seriously underestimated. This disc, sung by the all-female group Musica Ficta, reveals how well suited to women’s voices are music from Notre-Dame in Paris and the songs of many trouveres (the northern counterparts of the troubadours of Languedoc). The latter songs, for instance, often feature female protagonists and present different perspectives on love and life to those by their male counterparts. |
|
|
8.570977 YSAYE String Trio ‘Le Chimay’, Sonata for 2 Violins, Cello Sonata
Henning Kraggerud and Bard Monsen, violins • Lars Anders Tomter, viola Ole-Eirik Ree, cello
While Ysaye’s Six Solo Violin Sonatas (Naxos 8.555996) remain his best known works, the Belgian virtuoso also composed other pieces which translate his thorough knowledge of the violin’s capabilities into thrilling music. The performance here of his Sonata for Two Violins is based on the composer’s autograph and that of the String Trio draws on the original hand-written parts. For the recording of the Cello Sonata the artist referred to Ysaye’s own fingering and bowing instructions. All three works display the composer’s dazzling mastery of technique and instrumental colour.

8.111339 BEETHOVEN Symphonies Nos 1 & 3 (Karajan, 1952-1953)
Philharmonia Orchestra • Herbert von Karajan, conductor
Herbert von Karajan established himself as one of the 20th century’s greatest conductors, both in live performances and on recordings. Taken from the first of Karajan’s four Beethoven symphony cycles, made in the splendid acoustic of London’s Kingsway Hall, these are beautifully polished readings that traverse the decades with ease. The Karajan trademarks of ‘perfection of balance and blend’ can be heard, for example, in the beautifully pointed woodwind chording and weight of the pizzicatos at the opening of Symphony No. 1. No less telling is the opening of Symphony No. 3, which begins at a scorching pace, accents strong yet considered, followed by a broadly-based account of the Marcia funebre second movement which, while retaining Karajan’s exacting approach, does not smooth out dissonance.

8.111342 BRAHMS Ein Deutsches Requiem (1955)
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, baritone • Elisabeth Grummer, soprano
Choir of St Hedwig’s Cathedral, Berlin • Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
Rudolf Kempe, conductor
On its first release, this 1955 recording of Brahms’s A German Requiem was praised as ‘a worthy performance of the work and a well recorded one’ by Gramophone, which also commented that ‘Elisabeth Grummer sings her solo with beautiful tone and deep feeling’ and ‘Fischer-Dieskau gives a[n] expressive and musical account of his part’. The choir and orchestra perform with measures of equal conviction, subtlety and power. Recognised as a ‘musician’s conductor’, Rudolf Kempe was an outstanding interpreter of the German classics, always obtaining beautifully lucid playing allied to clarity of rhythm and sensitive phrasing.

8.112053 Fritz Kreisler Complete Recordings Vol 1 (1904, 1910)
Fritz Kreisler, violin • George Falkenstein, piano • Studio pianist
Fritz Kreisler sold millions of records and gave pleasure to listeners around the world who could never hear him perform live. This disc brings together recordings made in 1904 and 1910 which, despite the recording industry’s infancy and the extraordinary limitations placed on the musicians, are amazingly good in both artistic and technical terms. Alongside several beloved favourites such as Bach’s Air on the G String are several recordings of Kreisler’s own popular compositions, and alternative takes of several musical bon-bons.

NA197412 WILDE The Canterville Ghost
Read by Rupert Degas
A terrifying ghost is haunting the ancient mansion of Canterville Chase, complete with creaking floorboards, clanking chains and gruesome disguises - but the new occupants seem strangely undisturbed by his presence. Deftly contrasting the conventional gothic ghost story with the pragmatism of the modern world, Wilde creates a gently comic fable of the conflict between old and new. Rupert Degas’s hilarious reading brings the absurdity and theatricality of the story to life.

The Danish vocal ensemble thus celebrate Denmark’s proud connection with this German master who was appointed Kapellmeister to King Christian IV and worked at the Danish court for two periods over the course of eleven years. The cover illustrations show reliefs in beaten metal by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976), a member of the Die Bruuecke group founded in 1905 in Dresden – a city with which Schutz himself was closely associated. |

JPE HARTMANN The Key Masterpieces [2 CDs]
Various Artists
8.226103-04
JPE Hartmann (1805-1900) composed music throughout eight decades and was greatly admired by Grieg, and a stylistic inspiration for Nordic national romanticism. Hartmann took centre stage in the wake of the old Danish masters Weyse and Kuhlau and became the prime exponent of Danish ‘national’ music. The finest examples of this can be found in among other works the remarkable piano sonatas, the masterly theatre overtures and the opera Little Kirsten, judged at the time to be the very essence of Danishness. |

HAMERIK The Symphonies [4-CD Box Set)
Randi Stene, contralto • Danish National Choir
Danish National Symphony Orchestra
Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra • Thomas Dausgaard, conductor
6.200002
Asger Hamerik (1843-1923) counts as the most cosmopolitan Danish 19th-century composer and was even celebrated as a pioneering figure in American musical life of his day. Sadly, however, his more than one hundred compositions fell into oblivion, and a revival is long overdue. Hamerik’s crowning efforts were the seven symphonies and a Requiem. Composed during his long tenure as director of the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, this is grand Late Romantic music, and the internationally oriented cycle of symphonies perfectly matches the qualities that characterize Thomas Dausgaard, one of the most remarkable Nordic conductors of today and a passionate champion of great music off the beaten track. |

NIELSEN Cantatas
Cantata for the annual university commemoration (1908), Cantata for the Opening Ceremony of the National Exhibition in Aarhus 1909, Music for Hans Hartvig Seedorff Pedersen’s Hommage to Holberg (1923), From the music for Helge Rode’s Prologue to the 1916 Shakespeare Anniversary Festival,

Mathias Hedegaard, tenor • Palle Knudsen, baritone • Aarhus Cathedral Choir
Chorus of The Danish National Opera • Vox Aros
Aarhus Symphony Orchestra • Bo Holten, conductor
8.226079
There are still unknown, exciting sides to Denmark’s world-famous composer, Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). On this CD you can hear the premiere recordings of two of his cantatas for choir, soloists and orchestra. The cantatas were written in 1908-09, when Carl Nielsen was in one of his most productive phases. They have been performed several times since, but it is only in connection with the new collected edition of Nielsen’s works that they have appeared in print. The same is true of his genial Homage to Holberg, written in 1923 to celebrate the great 18th-century dramatist to whom Carl Nielsen also paid homage with his opera Maskarade.

This CD includes the 1957 Original Cast Recording of Leonard Bernstein’s popular musical. With a book by Arthur Laurents and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the musical’s plot is based on Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. Set in New York in the mid-1950s, the musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Also featured are three excerpts from the 1954 recordings of On the Waterfront, a film which starred Marlon Brando & Eva Marie Saint and which won eight Academy Awards. The soundtrack score for this work is Bernstein’s only original film score not adapted from a stage production with songs. BUYONLINE FROM NAXOSDIRECT.CA |

BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto no 2 / BRAHMS Piano Quintet in F minor
Glenn Gould (piano) • Columbia Symphony Orchestra • Leonard Bernstein Montreal String Quartet
8.111341
Glenn Gould played Beethoven’s piano concertos from the beginning of his short concert career, this recording being made when he was 24, the same age as the composer when he wrote his Piano Concerto No. 2. Gould’s vitality and enthusiasm in the first movement are particularly notable, as is Bernstein’s highly expressive interpretation of the beautiful Adagio. Despite his temperamental aversion to chamber music and his preference for pre-romantic music, Gould’s account with the Montreal String Quartet of Brahms’ F minor Piano Quintet is clearly articulated, propulsive and highly focussed.

VIVALDI/PIAZOLLA Acht Jahreszeiten
Tianwa Yang, violine • Ensemble Tianwa Yang
8.551228
This is what it’s all about: Two programmatic compositions on the same topic, from two completely different epochs and genres, face to face; Vivaldi and Piazolla, Italian Baroque and Tango from Argentina, what a challenge to be explored! Together with her Ensemble the excellent young Chinese violinist Tianwa Yang provides surprising listening experiences and discovers thrilling contrasts. Enthusiasm and verve run through the performance of every single note of this exceptional project, which can also be experienced live on her next tour. The genre-busting repertoire of this CD perfectly suits the abilities of Tianwa Yang since ‘...the young Chinese woman, who has been studying in Germany since 2005, is not only a phenomenal virtuoso with a developed sense of sound, but especially a thoroughly serious musician with an unusually nuanced understanding of the repertoire.’ (The Detroit News)

Real Group, Vibafemba and other artists
8.572338
Ensemble song is flourishing in Sweden. Never before have there been so many smaller vocal ensembles performing to such a high standard as there are today. A decisive reason for this is, of course, the popularity of choral singing in Sweden, for it is choirs that have provided the soil from which the groups have largely sprung up. The number of Swedes who regularly sing in choirs has been estimated at some half a million, and singing in smaller ensembles has, for many people, become a natural development of their choral participation. Sveriges Körförbund [Swedish Choral Association], which has been promoting choral and ensemble singing in Sweden since the beginning of the last century, naturally monitors this development very closely. As interest in singing in small groups has developed, the society has increased its activities in this field. The current album is one such aspect of this interest. For several years, Sveriges Körförbund has been engaged in a unique collaboration with Naxos and the current CD is a fruit of this collaboration. The items have been selected with the intention of illustrating the rich flora of vocal groups active in Sweden today.

Various orchestras • Richard Hickox, conductor
CHANDOS CHAN10568
The premature death of Richard Hickox on 23 November 2008, aged sixty, deprived the musical world of one of its greatest conductors. The depth and breadth of his musical achievements were astonishing, not least on behalf of British composers. Richard Hickox had a long and deeply fulfilling relationship with Chandos, which enabled him to realise his artistic vision. His recorded legacy remains as a testament to his musical ability and the pieces, movements and other excerpts chosen for this two-disc set demonstrate all aspects of his art. Chandos will donate the profits from the sales of the set (2 CDs for the price of 1) to The Richard Hickox Foundation which has been established to support the causes about which Richard felt passionately, among them support for British composers, young conductors and singers, and performances of British music.

MAHLER Des Knaben Wunderhorn (Youth’s Magic Horn)
Diana Damrau, soprano • Ivan Paley, baritone
Stephan Matthias Lademann, piano
TELOS TLS1001
World Premiere Recording of version for two singers and piano
Gustav Mahler’s biographical and musical legacy leaves us with the picture of a very sensitive and poetical personality. Preparing this recording of the complete Wunderhorn songs, the two artists on this CD, Diana Damrau and Ivan Paley, tried to accommodate Mahler’s character by sequencing the songs under the following headlines: Children and Youth, Separation and Farewell, From the Nature, Life and Death. This topical structure reflects Mahler’s world and his credo in a meaningful way and brings greater clarity to the listener. Mahler wrote his Wunderhorn songs spontaneously over a period of twelve years, within which he found joy through his love of his wife Alma and grief through the death of his little daughter – incisive events that transformed him as a man as well as a human being. In many of the songs there are two different characters who communicate with each other, therefore Diana Damrau and Ivan Paley chose to set two voices to the music and opted for an intimate chamber music version with piano, keeping in mind the fact that Mahler considered the piano score of the Wunderhorn songs as a work which stood on its own.

Christian Lindberg The Baroque Trombone
Christian Lindberg, trombone (sackbut)
Members of the Australian Chamber Orchestra
BIS-CD-1688
The big, powerful trombone of our time is a creature of wide open spaces and large auditoriums. ‘Trombone’ simply means ‘big trumpet’ and the two are nowadays seen as obvious bedfellows. Not so in the 17th century! The instrument was called sackbut – a soft sounding, gentle thing whose natural partners were the viola and recorder. The sackbuts were much smaller than today’s trombones, with tiny mouthpieces, tubes narrower than the ones on a modern trumpet, and bells that a man’s hand might easily cover. Christian Lindberg bought his first sackbut 30 years ago, and already then dreamed of recording a baroque programme.
Now the opportunity to do so has arrived – largely due to Lindberg’s encounter with the violinist Richard Tognetti and his Australian Chamber Orchestra. On this recording Lindberg and a handful of the ACO players in ‘sweet harmony’ present a programme including sonatas and canzonas by Biber, Frescobaldi and Dario Castello.

To Saint Cecilia - Music by Purcell, Handel & Haydn
Lucy Crowe, soprano • Nathalie Stutzmann, contralto Anders J. Dahlin, tenor • Richard Croft, tenor • Lucas Tittoto, bass
Les Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble • Marc Minkowski, conductor
NAÏVE V5183
All three composers celebrate anniversaries in 2009: Purcell was born in 1659, Handel died in 1759 and Haydn died in 1809. Purcell’s Hail! Bright Cecilia is one of his most marvellous odes to the patron saint of music. Handel’s A Song for Saint Cecilia’s Day is based on a superb poem by Dryden. One of Handel’s contemporaries stated that the poem exhibited the very ‘highest flights of poetic fancy’. As Hilary Finch states, ‘His Song for St Cecilia’s Day is a broad diorama of mankind - in love and at war, in life, death and resurrection’. It includes magnificent arias for soprano and for tenor. Haydn’s St Cecilia Mass (original version) rounds off this delightful 2-CD set. The full color booklet includes 12 paintings and representations of Saint Cecilia by the likes of Raphael, Rubens, Mignard, Lely, De Vouez, Da Cortona and Domenichino...A deluxe edition that enhances this ambitious project.

Herbert von Karajan - Maestro for the Screen:
A Film by Georg Wübbolt
Herbert von Karajan • Ernest Wild • Gela Marina Runne • Hugo Niebeling Horant Hohlfeld • Günther Breest • Norio Ohga
ARTHAUS DVD 101459
The film focuses on one specific facet of Herbert von Karajan’s artistic work: he was the first conductor who was obsessed with the filming of his musical performances in order to preserve a cultural heritage. Also as a film and TV director, he was an aesthete, a perfectionist, and a true pioneer. He once said: ‘Actually, I should have been born in a later era.’ Television engineering was still in the fledgling stages when Karajan started. Still, his visual approach and rigid rules how to film an orchestra and soloists - and of course how to present himself as a conductor – till today have an impact on everybody who produces recordings of concerts and opera for the screen. No wonder that Karajan’s high pretensions demanded a great deal of his entire film crew, and due to strong characters on both sides of the creative fence, once in a while simmering tensions came to head. Herbert von Karajan’s immediate co-operators, like his chief camera man Ernst Wild, the editor Gela Marina Runne, the director Hugo Niebeling, and various TV and record producers like Horant Hohlfeld, Günther Breest and Norio Ohga talk about their experiences with the Maestro.
