OPERA LAFAYETTE ORCHESTRA Opera Lafayette is a period instrument ensemble based in Washington, D.C., dedicated to performances of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century operas, particularly the French repertoire. Since its début in 1995, Opera Lafayette has garnered both critical acclaim and a loyal following for its concert and staged opera productions with well-known American and international artists. The Washington Post characterized the ensemble as “one of the most intellectually exciting fixtures of the Washington music world”.
Opera Lafayette records for Naxos and its discography includes Gluck’s Orphée et Euridice (Naxos 8.660185–86 released in 2005), Sacchini’s Oedipe à Colone (Naxos 8.660196–97, 2006), operatic arias (Naxos 8.557993) by Rameau with tenor Jean-Paul Fouchécourt, Lully’s Armide (Naxos 8.660209–10, 2008) and the present recording, Rebel and Francoeur’s Zélindor, roi des Sylphes. Opera Lafayette performed Zélindor with the New York Baroque Dance Company at the Music Center at Strathmore in Maryland and at the Rose Theater in Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York. In 2009 Opera Lafayette performed the modern American première of the opéra comique Le Déserteur by Monsigny at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and at the Rose Theater, and has recorded the work for release by Naxos in 2010.
