ARMAS JARNEFELT (1869 - 1958)
The Finnish-born composer Armas Jrnefelt enjoyed a career as a conductor and composer in Sweden, eventually taking Swedish citizenship. He studied with Wegelius and Busoni in Helsinki, with Becker in Berlin, and with Massenet in Paris. In 1907 he was appointed conductor at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm, continuing an active career as a conductor in Finland and in Sweden. His sister married Sibelius, whose music formed part of Jrnefelts concert repertoire. His Berceuse and the Praeludium, both scored for small orchestra, are among his better known compositions.
