ARS NOVA Ars Nova Copenhagen is one of Scandinavia's leading vocal ensembles in the field of the polyphonic choral music of the Renaissance and contemporary vocal music. The ensemble has recorded many internationally acclaimed CDs and has given innumerable concerts in many parts of the world. Ars Nova's principal conductor since 2002 has been Paul Hillier (formerly of The Hilliard Ensemble), who is also the conductor / artistic director of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and his own ensemble Theatre of Voices. Ars Nova has been among the pioneers in work on polyphonic Renaissance choral music, with highly acclaimed performances of the masterpieces of the period, by composers like des Prez, Tallis, di Lasso, Palestrina, Byrd and Taverner, and has also contributed greatly to the rediscovery of neglected masters like Pierre de la Rue, Pedro de Porto, Nicolas Gombert, Filipe de Magalhaes, Giaches de Wert and Jacob Obrecht. In avant-garde music Ars Nova focuses on music after about 1950 and has worked closely with leading Nordic composers like Per Nørgård, Ib Nørholm, Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, Hans Abrahamsen, Sven-David Sandström, Poul Ruders, Svend Nielsen and Bent Sørensen, all of whom have composed works for the ensemble. The same is true of important jazz composers such as Palle Mikkelborg, Pierre Dørge, Jan Garberek, Marilyn Mazur and Egberto Gismonti. Since 1979 Ars Nova has given more than 150 first performances, and besides music by Nordic composers the repertoire includes works by Pärt, Cage, Feldman, Riley, Reich, Class, Kagel, Nono, Berio and Steve Martland. Ars Nova has recorded music by Per Nørgård on the CDs New Music for Choir (Wie ein Kind, cond. Ivan Hansen, Kontrapunkt), Den foruroligende Aelling (“The Alarming Duckling”) (cond. Ivan Hansen and Bo Holten, Exlibris) and Singe die Gärten, mein Herz (cond. Tamás Vetö, Dacapo).
