BAVARIAN CLASSICAL PLAYERS
The Bavarian Classical Players is an ensemble formed from leading members of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich. The orchestra of Bavarian Radio was established in 1949 under Eugen Jochum (1902–87), who remained principal conductor until 1960. Jochum succeeded in engaging as principals members of the Koeckert and Freund Quartet. From 1961 until 1979 Rafael Kubelík (1914–96) followed as principal conductor. Kyrill Kondraschin (1914–81) was principal conductor designate for the 1982/1983 season, but in 1981 died of a heart attack in Amsterdam. After a two-year search Sir Colin Davis (1927–2013) held the position from 1983 to 1993. Lorin Maazel (1930–2014) followed, from 1993 to 2002. At the beginning of the 2003/2004 season Mariss Jansons (b. 1943) became principal conductor. In 2006 the orchestra was awarded a GRAMMY® in the Best Orchestral Performance class.
