BERLIN DEUTSCHE OPERA ORCHESTRA

The 1912 inauguration of the Deutsches Opernhaus on Bismarckstraße in Charlottenburg was due in no small part to the initiative of Charlottenburg’s opera enthusiasts. The incorporation of Charlottenburg into Berlin in 1925 saw the subsequent engagement of artists such as Bruno Walter, Paul Dessau, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Leo Blech and Fritz Busch. In 1934, under musical director Artur Rother, Karl Böhm made his first guest appearance at the Charlottenburg opera. In 1948 the opera hired Ferenc Fricsay as musical director. In the 1950s Karl Böhm returned to conduct the orchestra, followed by Hermann Scherchen and Silvio Varviso; in the 1954/55 season Artur Rother and Richard Kraus were jointly appointed to the rôle of musical director. In 1961 the opera company was finally able to return to its original site. Since then there have been a series of distinguished conductors and musical directors, including Fricsay, Maazel, Hollreiser, Jochum, Böhm, von Karajan, Mehta, Leinsdorf, Albrecht, Stein, Sinopoli, Foster, Viotti, Barenboim, Schneider, López Cobos, Kout, Frühbeck de Burgos, Thielemann, Zedda, Zagrosek, Steinberg, Palumbo, Abel, Lacombe and Nelsons. At the beginning of the 2009 season, the Deutsche Oper Berlin appointed Donald Runnicles as its new musical director.
