BILBAO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Bilbao Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1922 and gave its first concert on 8th March that year in the Teatro Arriaga under the baton of Armand Marsick. Over the years, he was succeeded as conductor by Vladimir Golschmann, Jesús Arámbarri, Antoine de Bavier, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Alberto Bolet, José Limantour, Pedro Pirfano, Urbano Ruiz Laorden and Theo Alcántara. The orchestra’s current artistic director and permanent conductor, Juan José Mena, was appointed in 1999. The orchestra has had a long list of illustrious guest conductors, and has also performed with some of the world’s best-known instrumentalists, singers and choral ensembles. It has given concerts in Madrid, as part of the Great Orchestras of the World season, at the Lisbon Expo, at the Santander International Festival, the San Sebastián Musical Fortnight and the Festival of Paris.
