The Blair Woodwind Quintet, founded in 1971, is the faculty quintet at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music. The ensemble has an extensive repertoire, and performs live concerts nationally as well as on radio and television. The Quintet has given premières of compositions by Tom Benjamin, John Elmquist, Eloy Fominaya, Irving Kane, Sterling Lanier, Joe Laird, John Marvin, Jonathan Saunders, Gay Spears, Dan Welcher, arrangers Jay Dawson and Eberhard Ramm, and Vanderbilt/Blair School of Music colleagues Michael Kurek and Michael Alec Rose.
Jane Kirchner is associate professor of flute and former long-time associate dean at Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music. A charter member of the Blair Woodwind Quintet, she was previously a member of the Nashville Symphony and has appeared in various chamber settings on national public radio, national educational television, and at the National Flute Association convention, as well as serving as clinician/adjudicator at local, regional, and national levels. The Blair School flute studio is named in her honor.
Oboist Jared Hauser has appeared internationally as soloist and chamber musician. He serves as assistant professor of oboe at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music, and formerly as principal oboist of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. His other orchestral credits include appearances as guest principal with the symphony orchestras of Atlanta, Houston, Nashville, and the Orchestra Camerata Ducale (Turin, Italy) among others. His principal teachers include James Caldwell, Alex Klein, Robert Atherholt, Dan Stolper, and Harry Sargous.
Cassandra Lee is Associate Professor of Clarinet at the Blair School of Music, where she has been a member of the Blair Woodwind Quintet for many years. She is a long time member of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, and has been guest clarinetist with the Florida Symphony Orchestra, Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. She has played solo recitals, chamber recitals, served as adjudicator and taught master-classes in many states including West Virginia, Michigan, Washington D.C., Kentucky and Tennessee.
Cynthia Estill has been Associate Professor of Bassoon at the Blair School of Music for many years and is currently serving as chairman of the woodwind department. She has also held positions at the Aspen Music Festival, Peninsula Music Festival (WI), and at the Festival der Zukunft in Switzerland. She can be heard on many other Naxos recordings as principal bassoonist with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.
Associate Prof of Horn, Leslie Norton has been a faculty member of the Blair School of Music since 1989. Also principal horn with the Nashville Symphony since 1990, she has performed with the Rochester Philharmonic, the Atlanta Symphony, Eastern Music Festival, Skaneateles Festival, OK Mozart Festival, and Peninsula Music Festival. Norton received her Bachelor of Music and Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music where she studied with Verne Reynolds.
