BRUNO CANINO

Born in Naples, Bruno Canino studied piano and composition at the Conservatorio Verdi in Milan where he taught the piano for 24 years. For ten years he gave a course in piano and chamber music at the Berne Conservatoire. He has performed both as a soloist and a chamber musician in all the principal concert venues of Europe, the United States, Australia, Japan and China. For over forty years he has been regularly performing with Antonio Ballista, his piano duo partner. He has also collaborated with Salvatore Accardo, Uto Ughi, Pierre Amoyal, Itzhak Perlman, Cathy Berberian, Severino Gazzelloni and Viktoria Mullova (with whom he won the Edison prize in 1980) among many others. From 1999 to 2002 Bruno Canino was director of the Music Section of the Venice Biennale. He is deeply involved in contemporary music and has collaborated with many composers including Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Karlheinz Stockhausen, György Ligeti, Bruno Maderna, Luigi Nono, Sylvano Bussotti, Wolfgang Rihm and Mauricio Kagel often giving world première performances of their works. He has played with leading orchestras including the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, Milan, the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Rome, the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra and the Orchestre National de France, and with distinguished conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, Wolfgang Sawallisch and Pierre Boulez. He has given regular masterclasses in piano and chamber music in Italy, Germany, Japan and Spain, and performs at the Marlboro Festival in the USA. He is frequently invited to serve on the juries of important international piano competitions. Bruno Canino’s recordings include the complete piano works of Casella and Chabrier. In 1997 Passigli Editions published his book Vademecum for a chamber pianist.
