Cliff Burwell was born in New Haven, Connecticut. He studied piano during high school and later received formal training
in composition, counterpoint and harmony. Burwell played piano with popular orchestras, most notably with Rudy Vallee and
His Connecticut Yankees. He is best known for his composition “Sweet Lorraine” (1928) which was fit with lyrics
by Mitchell Parish and popularized by Vallee’s earlier group Rudy Vallee and His Heigh-Ho Yale Collegians.
