DAVID JOHNSON David Johnson was born in Bexhill-on-Sea of a percussionist father who encouraged his son from an early age. In 1957 at the age of twenty one Johnson joined the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Beecham. From1966–72 he was with the Philharmonia and then moved to the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Boulez. As a member of the London
Sinfonietta he made his Proms solo début in Messiaen’s Des canyons aux étoiles. He was co-founder with James Holland of the London Percussion Ensemble and taught at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the Royal Northern College of Music. He died in 1990.
