Established in 2003 by Marc Lewon (lute, Germany), Margit Übellacker (dulcemelos, Austria) and Yukiko Yaita (recorders, Japan), Dulce Melos was an international ensemble dedicated to instrumental music of the Middle Ages and Early Renaissance that disbanded after the release of their second and final album (Das Glogauer Liederbuch, Naxos 8.572576). The struck and plucked strings together with the recorder, and combined with the bowed strings of Elizabeth Rumsey (fiddle, Australia) and Uri Smilansky (fiddle, Israel) formed a unique ensemble sound, ideally fit for this repertoire. The members of the ensemble met as students in the medieval department of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and with their ensemble have had many invitations to important festivals of early music, including the Freunde Alter Musik Basel (FAMB), Flauto Fribourg, montalbâne and the Boston Early Music Festival. The characteristic style of the ensemble derived from the balance of subtlety in musical style, exuberant polyphonic settings, and individual virtuosity. Critical preoccupation with sources distinguished the players as interpreters of early music who established their own arrangements, suited to their personal instruments and the individual style of the repertoire in question. The ensemble was particularly involved in the reconstruction of long neglected instruments and their reintroduction into historical performance, among them the dulcemelos, from which the ensemble took its name, a medieval form of the hammered dulcimer, the name of which means ‘sweet melody’ or ‘sweet sound’.

The direction for the recording of the Lochamer-Liederbuch was in the hands of the founding member and lutenist Marc Lewon. (www.lewon.de)
