ELIAS NIKOLAUS AMMERBACH

(1530 - 1597)

Briefly a student at the University of Leipzig, Elias Nicolaus Ammerbach served as organist at the Thomaskirche from 1561 to 1595. His particular achievement lay in the development of the new German organ tablature (a system of writing organ music by a combination of letter notation and rhythmic signs).
