ROY GOODMAN

Born in 1951, Roy Goodman began his musical education as a chorister at King's College, Cambridge where he was the treble soloist in a famous recording of Allegri's Miserere.

He embarked on his conducting career in 1974 with a repertoire that included the symphonies of Shostakovich and Sibelius. In 1975 he formed the Brandenburg Consort and became absorbed in the practice of historical performance. In 1981, after ten years as a teacher and violinist, Roy Goodman began directing the Hanover Band. He was Principal Conductor from 1986 to 1994 and gained an international reputation for his revelatory performances of 18th and 19th century music.

Since 1989 he has also been Music Director of the European Union Baroque Orchestra.

An invitation to conduct the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1985 was the catalyst for Roy Goodman's flourishing career as an international conductor. Within a few years Goodman, with the Hanover Band, had recorded on CD the first ever performances on historic instruments of the complete symphonies by Beethoven, Cherubini, Schubert, Schumann and Weber, as well as 60 symphonies by Haydn.

In 1994 Goodman was invited to be the first Principal Conductor of the Umeå Symphony Orchestra and of the Swedish Northern Opera. He now holds the posts of Principal Conductor of the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra in Winnipeg and Musical Director of the European Union Baroque Orchestra. He has also been working in recent times with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Turku Philharmonic, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra, the New Sinfonietta Amsterdam, the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and the Malmö Symphony Orchestra.

Recent opera direction has included a number of works by Handel and Mozart in Lisbon; at Opera North in Leeds and Opera Northern Ireland in Belfast; at Flanders Opera in Ghent and Antwerp; in the Staatstheater Mainz and the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe. In 1999 Roy Goodman made his debut at the English National Opera with Gluck's Orpheus and at the Drottningholm Theatre, Stockholm with a new Swedish opera, TrädgÃ¥rden by Jonas Forssell. In 2001 and 2002, Roy Goodman is paying return visits to Drottningholm for a new production of Giulio Cesare.

For Naxos, Roy Goodman has recorded, with the European Union Baroque Orchestra, Apollo and Dafne and The Alchemist by Handel.
