HENRY SHEK

Henry Shek was born in the Chinese city of Tientsin and grew up in Hong Kong. A scholarship took him to San Francisco Conservatory to study conducting and composition and after graduation in 1972 he continued his conducting studies in Tokyo and New York, as well as with Igor Markevitch in Paris and Franco Ferrara in Rome and Milan. He also served an apprenticeship in opera-houses in Germany and Italy as an opera coach and conductor. From 1974 he held conducting appointments in New York and began to expand his international career, winning the Bronze Medal in 1975 at the Herbert von Karajan Conductors' Competition and the Gold Medal and Silver Baton Award at the San Remo Opera-House Competition in the same year. In 1976 he took third prize at the Besan on Competition and since then has enjoyed a busy career as a guest conductor throughout Europe and in the Far East, in Japan and Taiwan as well as in Hong Kong, where he has since 1993 been Music Director of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.
