DAVID RUSSELL HULME

David Russell Hulme has devoted much of his career to light opera and British music. A pupil of Sir Adrian Boult, he has conducted extensively for Carl Rosa Opera in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, specialising in Gilbert and Sullivan. Appearances in this repertoire have been as far-flung as the Royal Canada Opera, Christchurch Festival (New Zealand) and the Buxton International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. A well-known Sullivan authority, he has written for the BBC Proms and New Grove dictionaries, and been involved with G&S productions/recordings by English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, D’Oyly Carte, New Sadler’s Wells and others. He edited Sullivan’s music for Mike Leigh’s Topsy-Turvy and his critical edition of Ruddigore is published by OUP. (Other OUP editions range from Haydn to Walton.) Current positions include Director of Music at Aberystwyth University. He is much involved with Edward German’s music, which he frequently writes about and performs.
