The ensemble Il Curioso was formed in 1997 and its aim is to revive the full spectrum of medieval, Renaissance and early Baroque music, from lively, spur-of-the-moment dance music to the formal festive music written for special occasions in middleclass households, at court or in church. The ensemble's choice of instruments is guided by historical practice, as documented or pictured in numerous sources, from the time of the medieval minstrels to that of the professional town bands, church and court-based ensembles. Authentic woodwind instruments such as recorders, crumhorns, bombardes, shawms, flutes, rauschpfeifen and dulcians may be supplemented with brass, percussion and plucked instruments of the appropriate period. In recent years, Il Curioso has built up a full programme of concert appearances in Germany and neighbouring European countries and has recorded for radio and television.
