JENS PETER MAINTZ

Jens Peter Maintz studied with David Geringas and attended master-classes by Heinrich Schiff, Boris Pergamenshikov and Siegfried Palm. He won first prize at the Munich Competition in 1994, and in 1995 became principal cellist of the Berlin Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester. He became professor of cello at the University of the Arts in Berlin in 2004. He is also a member of the Trio Fontenay.

As a soloist and chamber musician, Jens Peter Maintz has given concerts throughout Europe and in the Americas, appearing with distinguished conductors and colleagues. In December 2003 he was soloist for the first German performance of Richard Danielpour’s Cello Concerto No. 1 at the Berlin Philharmonic, and at Claudio Abbado’s invitation, has been the principal cellist of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra since 2006. In the 2006–2007 season he performed the Schumann Cello Concerto with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra under Marek Janowski and the Brahms Double Concerto with Arabella Steinbacher. His first CD with Sony Classical was awarded the Echo prize. He has also recorded the Isang Yun Cello Concerto with the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin for Capriccio.
