Born in Grimma, in Saxony, the bass Jochen Kupfer studied singing with Helga Forner at the Leipzig Musikhochschule, and participated in masterclasses with Aldo Baldin, Theo Adam and Elio Battaglia, with lessons from Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. In addition to the Luitpold Prize at the 2001 Kissinger Summer he has won important prizes, including the Mozart Festival Competition (Würzburg), the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition (Leipzig), the Mendelssohn Bartholdy Competition (Berlin) and the Mastersingers Competition (Nuremberg). He has collaborated with distinguished conductors, including Giuseppe Sinopoli, Hartmut Haenchen, Kurt Masur, René Jacobs, Philipp Herreweghe, Mark Soustrot, Jeffrey Tate, Peter Schreier, Helmuth Rilling and Trevor Pinnock. He also appears in recitals and has been a guest at a number of leading festivals. He has appeared at the Berlin State Opera unter den Linden, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Meiningen State Theatre and the Dresden Semper Opera.
