JOHANNES GHISELIN (1455 - 1507)
The
Flemish composer Johannes Ghiselin, also known as Verbonnet, was in the service
of the d'Este family in Ferrara, and maintained this connection in a career
that took him to Florence and to the service of the King of France. He was
entrusted with the accompaniment of Josquin from Paris to Ferrara, when the
latter was appointed to the court chapel there, and possibly with the task of
escorting Obrecht to Ferrara in 1504. Regarded as one of the leading composers
of his time, he returned north to Bergen op Zoom after the death of Ercole
d'Este I in 1505. His compositions include nine Masses, motets, with secular
French and Flemish chansons and songs.
