The soprano Judith Howarth studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, followed by engagements at the Royal Opera House in London where, over nine seasons, she sang rôles including Oscar (Un ballo in maschera), Gilda (Rigoletto) and Norina (Don Pasquale). Subsequent international engagements have included Ellen Orford (Peter Grimes) in Toulouse and Santiago, Liù (Turandot) at the Berlin Staatsoper and Olga (Fedora) in Washington. She has sung Violetta (La traviata) in Minneapolis, Amsterdam and at the Glyndebourne Festival. Other rôles have included Musetta (La bohème) in Cincinatti, Marie in Donizetti’s La Fille du régiment in Genoa and Nedda (Pagliacci) in Miami, where she also sang the soprano rôles in Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann. She has sung Gilda (Rigoletto) at the London English National Opera, London, Elvira (I puritani) for the Chelsea Opera Group and Elisabetta (Don Carlos) in Helsinki. In Minneapolis she sang the title-rôle in Colin Graham’s production of Madama Butterfly. In 2013 she sang the title-rôle in Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda for Welsh National Opera. Her concert career has brought appearances throughout the world and collaborations with distinguished colleagues and conductors. Her recordings include Troilus and Cressida under Richard Hickox, which won the Gramophone magazine’s Opera of the Year award. She has recorded Il segreto di Susanna with the Oviedo Filharmonia under Friedrich Haider and the title-rôle in Mercadente’s Maria Stuarda, regina di Scozia for Opera Rara.
