LEIPZIG MDR SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Germany’s oldest radio orchestra, the MDR Leipzig Symphony Orchestra is today one of the most innovative ensembles of its kind in Europe, featured regularly on radio and television. Incorporating the three federal states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia the MDR Leipzig Symphony Orchestra is based in a region that shares a musical heritage beyond compare. The orchestra draws on this rich tradition by including contemporary music and cross-genre experiments in its programmes. In 2012 Kristjan Järvi became the music director of the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra. Together they are exploring new ways of presenting classical music and attracting new audiences in Germany and beyond. The MDR Leipzig Radio Choir and Symphony Orchestra received the European Cultural Prize for Orchestra and Choir in 2013. In 2011 their classical music network “Clara”, one of the largest in Germany, was given the accolade of the “Best classical music initiative for young people in Germany”.
