LEIPZIG MDR SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Germany’s oldest radio orchestra, the MDR Symphony Orchestra (Symphony Orchestra of the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk) is today one of the most innovative ensembles of its kind in Europe, featuring regularly on radio and television. Incorporating the three federal states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia the MDR Symphony Orchestra is based in a region that shares a musical heritage beyond compare. The orchestra draws on this rich tradition and continues it by including contemporary music and cross-genre experiments in its programmes. In 2007 Jun Märkl became the principal conductor of the MDR Symphony Orchestra. He follows in the footsteps of an illustrious line of conductors including Hermann Abendroth, Herbert Kegel, Wolf-Dieter Hauschild and Fabio Luisi.
