LONDON SCHOOLS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

London Schools Symphony Orchestra

The London Schools Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1951. It offers school-age children the opportunity to study symphonic repertoire under the guidance of professional conductors. Among the many distinguished musicians who have worked with the orchestra are Sir Colin Davis, Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Simon Rattle, Meredith Davies, John Lubbock and Christopher Adey. In a special association with the English Chamber Orchestra, each section of the London Schools Symphony Orchestra is coached by the former orchestra's principal players. Works by twentieth century composers are regularly performed, and Sir Michael Tippett, Witold Lutoslawski, Paul Patterson and George Benjamin have each conducted the orchestra in performances of their own works. In addition to appearing at the Barbican Centre, Royal Festival Hall, Kenwood Bowl and other leading concert venues, the orchestra has undertaken a number of overseas tours, performing in Argentina, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Scandinavia and the United States.
