The German tenor Eberhard F. Lorenz was born in Ulm. He first studied music with his principal subject trumpet at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg. Following this he studied vocal music with Aldo Baldin at the Musikhochschule in Karlsruhe. He also took courses with Kurt Equiluz, Louis Devos, Pavel Lissizian and James Wagner. He was awarded a scholarship of the region Baden-Württemberg in 1987. In his early career he was a frequent guest at the theatre in Basel, with rôles including that of Andres in Wozzeck. From 1990 until 1996 he was engaged as a resident artist at the Gärtnerplatz-Theatre in Munich and in 1997 moved to the Bonn Opera, where he appeared with great success in rôles including those of Mime in Das Rheingold, the Captain in Wozzeck, and Pedrillo. Since 1990 he has appeared as a guest at the opera in Frankfurt as Brighella in Ariadne auf Naxos and Valzacchi in Der Rosenkavalier. At the Staatsoper in Hamburg he sang the Erzähler in the world première of Schnittke’s Historia von D. Johann Fausten, and in 1997 appeared in Busoni’s Doktor Faustus at the Opéra de Lyon and in 1998 in the world première of Trojahn’s Was ihr wollt at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. He has a resident guest-contract with the Staatsoper in Stuttgart, where he has appeared as Mime in Das Rheingold. He had particular success as the Astrologer in Le coq d’or at the festival in Bregenz in summer 2000, and in May 2001 was heard in Honegger’s Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher under the direction of Helmuth Rilling in Munich, returning in 2002 to the Bregenz Festival. Other engagements have included appearances at the Nederlandse Opera, the Salzburg Festival, the Komische Oper in Berlin and the Opéra National de Paris.
