MICHAEL SANDERLING The cellist Michael Sanderling was born in 1967 in Berlin, where he studied at the Hanns Eisler Musikhochschule and with Yo-Yo Ma, Bernhard Greenhouse and William Pleeth. He won prizes in the Maria Canals Competition in Barcelona, the JS Bach Competition in Leipzig and the Munich ARD Competition, and from the age of 20 was engaged by Kurt Masur as principal cellist in the Gewandhaus Orchestra. From 1992 to 1998 he taught at the Hanns Eisler Musikhochschule and became a professor of cello at the Frankfurt am Main Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst. As a chamber musician he has appeared at the Schleswig Holstein Music Festival, the Lucerne and Salzburg Festivals, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Bad Kissingen, the Lower Saxony and Ludwigsburg Castle Festivals and at the Berlin Konzerthaus. Since 1994 he has served as a principal in the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. He plays a cello by the Berlin-maker Matthias Cressin.
