MUSICA BAROCCA

Musica Barocca is a chamber ensemble of five principal players devoted mainly to the European baroque repertoire for one or two recorders. Their first recorder player is also a highly skilled viola da gamba player, thus greatly expanding their musical options. The group has performed regularly in London, France, Austria and South America.

Johanna Valencia (recorder) was born in Austria in 1964, and began her recorder studies at the age of six, eventually graduating with honours from the Vienna Hochschule für Musik where she now teaches. She also studied the viola da gamba with José Vazquez and has attended workshops with Jordi Savall. She has gained wide experience as a teacher and performer in Austria, as well as in Colombia, Britain, Italy, France, Hungary and Switzerland

Maria Martinez (recorder) was born in Colombia, and graduated as a recorder player and oboist from Manhattanville College, New York. From 1989 she continued her recorder studies with the Dutch player Anneke Boeke at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She has made frequent appearances in Colombia, Europe, and the USA.

Daniel Valencia (viola de gamba)had his early musical training in his native Colombia, and studied with José Vazquez at the Vienna Hochschule für Musik, and in masterclasses with Christophe Coin and Jordi Savall. He has a busy schedule playing and teaching in many countries, including Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Germany , France and Colombia.

Mauricio Buraglia (theorbo) was born in Colombia and has lived in Paris for over twenty years. His lute teachers have included Paul O'Dette, Konrad Junghanel and Hopkinson Smith. His improvisation skills keep him in great demand as a continuo player, and he has appeared on nearly 30 recordings.

Juan Esté (harpsichord and organ) had his first harpsichord lessons with Rafael Puyana in his native Colombia, and his musical studies continued at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, the Guildhall School of Music and Boston University. He has performed extensively as a soloist and with chamber groups in Europe, South America and the USA.
