Mabel Perelstein was born in Argentina but has Spanish nationality. She studied voice with Noemi Souza in Argentina and Isabel Penagos at the Escuela Superior de Canto in Madrid, where she obtained a degree in voice with a specialization in opera and concert. She studied further with Christa Ludwig, Gina Cigna, Schilhawsky, Vera Rozsa and Mark Deller. She has been awarded first prizes at various international competitions, including the Maria Canals in Barcelona, Jacinto Guerrero in Madrid, Toti dal Monte in Treviso, Conchita Badia in Santiago de Compostela, with second prize in the Marseille Opera Competition and the Marseille Special Music Critics Award, the Verdi Medal at the Concorso Internazionale per Voci Verdiane in Busseto in 1988 and the Lola Rodriguez Aragón in Madrid in 1991. She has undertaken a wide repertoire of mezzo rôles, appearing throughout the world, from the Americas to Japan, and in major theatres throughout Europe. Her recordings include the rôles of Mistress Quickly in Falstaff and Emilia in Otello, among others. Her professional activity is divided between opera, recital and oratorio, with a repertoire that ranges from baroque to contemporary music.
