Born in Paris, Philippe Pierlot was the last pupil of Joseph Rampal and studied subsequently with Jean-Pierre Rampal and Alain Marion at the Paris Conservatoire, where he was awarded first prizes in flute and in chamber music. He also took first prize at the international competition in Barcelona. In 1976 he became a principal in the Orchestre National de France and has served on a number of international competition juries.
