PYRAMIDE ENSEMBLE

Markus Brönnimann, flute
Barbara Tillmann, oboe
Ulrike Jacoby, violin
Muriel Schweizer, viola
Anita Jehli, cello
Jaël Bertschinger, harp

Ensemble Pyramide was founded in Zurich in 1991. Its unusual instrumentation consists of flute, oboe, violin, viola, cello, and harp. Through long years of working together in the same formation, the Ensemble has forged an unmistakeable sound and a unique stylistic flexibility in the performance of music ranging from the Baroque to the 21st century. In unconventional concert programmes the ensemble likes to show surprising music-historical relationships by juxtaposing early and modern music. Connected with this is the establishment of a special repertoire that also includes, beside classical quartets and quintets with two wind instruments and string trio, French chamber music with harp from the first half of the twentieth century. The ensemble also dedicates itself to the revival of forgotten works and has commissioned compositions, most recently from Elena Firsova and Gao Ping. A further focus of the ensemble's work are compositions that have been arranged by Markus Brönnimann for the sextet's particular instrumentation. Since 1995 Ensemble Pyramide has organized its own concert series in Zurich. Radio and CD recordings complement the ensemble's wide-ranging concert activities in Europe.
