Riccardo Savinelli has been principal viola of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma since 2004. He graduated from the Conservatorio Guido Cantelli in his native Novara, after participating successfully as a boy in various competitions. After studies at the Cremona Accademia Stauffer under Bruno Giuranna, he went to Belgium, obtaining a Master’s degree in viola at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent under Michael Kugel. He was a founder member of the Brioso Quartet, playing for major Belgian institutions. At the Ghent International Competition for String Quartet, the ensemble was rewarded with second prize. In 2005 he was invited by Gianandrea Noseda to join his orchestra at the Settimane Musicali di Stresa. He has also played with different chamber ensembles in various music festivals in Italy. In 2006–2007 he undertook postgraduate courses and masterclasses with Simonide Bracone (principal viola of the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala), in 2008 with Danusha Waskiewicz (principal viola of the Orchestra Mozart, Bologna) and in 2009 with Gilad Karni (principal viola of the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra). He is a member of the conductorless Spira Mirabilis ensemble, with which he has appeared in Italy, Germany and Great Britain.
