ROMAN TREKEL

“Trekel’s command of these songs is nothing short of phenomenal, from his seemingly effortless technical facility to his always tasteful yet meaningful interpretive gestures, inflections, and brilliant use of color and dynamics.”
Classics Today reviewing Roman Trekel’s recording of Schubert’s Winterreise for Naxos.

Born in Pirna, Germany, the baritone Roman Trekel at first studied the violin and the oboe, moving to vocal training after entering the Berlin Music Conservatory. There he studied with Heinz Reeh from 1980 to 1986.

Trekel has won several international singing competitions. Having been awarded first prize at the Walter Gruner International Lieder Competition in London, he was invited to appear in concerts and solo recitals at the Schubertiade Feldkirch, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, the NDR radio station in Hannover, the Cologne Philharmonie, the Wigmore Hall in London and in the main concert halls of Vienna, Zurich and Brussels.

A member of the opera workshop of Berlin’s Deutsche Staatsoper from 1986 to 1988, Roman Trekel joined the regular ensemble in 1988. He has also signed a contract to appear as guest artist at the opera of Frankfurt/Main. In 1996 he made his début at the Dresden State Opera and at the Bayreuth Festival.

His first major success, which attracted international attention, was as Pelléas at the Deutsche Staatsoper. He has subsequently played a number of rôles including Harlekin (Ariadne auf Naxos), Guglielmo (Così Fan Tutte), Figaro (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Olivier (Capriccio), Wolfram (Tannhäuser), Zar (Zar und Zimmermann) and Sharpless (Madame Butterfly).

Roman Trekel has also performed at many European festivals such as the Flandern-Festival, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Salzburg Festival and the Festival of Ancient Music in Innsbruck.

In 1989 Roman Trekel held a teaching post at the Hans Eisler College of Music in Berlin.
