Gil Rose is an American conductor who is shaping the future of classical music. In 1996 Rose founded the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, America’s foremost professional orchestra dedicated exclusively to performing and recording twentieth and twenty-first century music. Under his leadership, BMOP’s unique programming and high performance standards have attracted critical acclaim and earned the orchestra eight ASCAP awards for adventurous programming. As a guest conductor, Gil Rose has led the Tanglewood Opera Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Symphony, American Composers Orchestra, the Warsaw Philharmonic, the Cleveland Chamber Symphony, and the National Orchestra of Porto. Since 2003 he has served as Music Director of the innovative Opera Boston. Together with BMOP, they launched the much-celebrated Opera Unlimited, a ten-day contemporary opera festival, which presented the world première of Elena Ruehr’s Toussaint Before the Spirits, the New England première of Thomas Ades’s Powder Her Face, and a revival of John Harbison’s A Full Moon in March. In 2006 Opera Unlimited presented the United States première of Peter Eötvös’s Angels in America to critical acclaim. Rose’s extensive discography includes numerous world première recordings, including the complete orchestral music of Arthur Berger, a New York Times “Best CD of 2003”.
