Joel Sachs, co-director of Continuum, has appeared throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Latin America as a pianist and conductor. One of New York’s most active presenters of new music, he founded and directs the New Juilliard Ensemble, a chamber orchestra for new music; Juilliard’s annual Focus! Festival; and the school’s concerts at MoMA. In addition to Continuum CDs, he has recorded with ensembles in Iceland and Mexico. A frequent commentator on new music, he was studio guest and performer on BBC Radio 3’s ‘Composer of the Week’, which devoted five one-hour programs in 2015 to Henry Cowell, whose biography he wrote. He received honorary membership in Phi Beta Kappa at Harvard for his service to new music, Poland’s Gloria Artis medal for support of new Polish music, and Columbia University’s Alice M. Ditson Conductor’s Award for service to American music. Joel Sachs holds the BA from Harvard and the MA and PhD from Columbia University.
