SAN DIEGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA The San Diego Symphony first performed in 1910 at the US Grant Hotel in San Diego.
Complementing the growth of the San Diego metropolitan area, the symphony has also developed to become one of America’s most significant orchestras. Its concerts are presented mainly in the historic Copley Symphony Hall. Jung-Ho Pak has been artistic director and principal conductor of the San Diego Symphony since 1998.
The symphony produces numerous subscription concert series during its primary season from October to May. The format for each series ranges from traditional classical, called the Connoisseur Series, to holiday and family-friendly concerts. Another series, the Light Bulb Series, is an innovative concept that uncovers the mysteries of classical music through interactive programmes featuring compelling soloists and interviews with unexpected guests.
From July to September, the symphony presents an outdoor 10-week Summer Pops season. These increasingly popular events mix classical favorites with pop music and innovative programming.
In addition to these mainstream events, the symphony presents numerous educational and community outreach concerts each year which attempt to embrace the dynamic and rich cultural life of San Diego. Through the education program and “Kids’ Concerts”, San Diego Symphony is able to help build an audience for the future. With this aim, musicians from the orchestra often visit schools to interact with children of all levels and musical aptitudes.
For Naxos, the San Diego Symphony has focused on the music of Berlioz: recording Romeo et Juliette (excerpts), Harold in Italy, a collection of overtures and, most recently, the French composer’s great Symphonie fantastique.
