VENANZ SCHUBERT

Born in 1936, Dr Venanz Schubert, as a scholar of the German National Academic Foundation, studied Philosophy, Theology, Classical Philology, Musicology and History at the Universities of Bamberg and Munich. Holding a doctorate in Philosophy, in 1974 he joined the Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) Munich, where his last position was director of Interdisciplinary Studies. He retired in 2002. He was the editor of Wissenschaft und Philosophie. Interdisziplinäre Studien (24 volumes) and of the LMU’s research journal Einsichten, and has published a considerable number of books and papers in his area, including Rationalität und Sentiment. Das Zeitalter Johann Sebastian Bachs und Georg Friedrich Händels (St Ottilien: EOS Verlag 1987). From 1958 he served as organist and as a member of the schola cantorum and the choir (led by Rudolf Thomas) of St Ludwig, the University Church of Munich. He has been a member of the madrigal choir of the Munich University of Music, founded by Professor Fritz Schieri. At the same time he sang with the Cappella Antiqua Munich, led by Dr Konrad Ruhland, and was involved in numerous recordings and broadcasts. In 1994, with his daughter Mirjam, he founded the Palestrina Ensemble Munich.
