RAVI SHANKAR

Ravi Shankar was born in Benares in 1920. With his father and his brother, he left India in 1930 to settle in Europe, first in Paris. When he returned to India in 1938 he gradually won a name as a performer, with recitals on All-India Radio. Ravi Shankar is a classical sitar performer and in this a traditional purist, but as a composer he has sought to push back boundaries. His association with George Harrison of the Beatles, who studied with him, transformed him from a highly respected classical musician to the hippie idol of Woodstock.
