MICHAEL SPYRES

Michael Spyres was born in Missouri and studied in the United States and later at the Vienna Conservatory. His repertoire includes Raoul (Les Huguenots), Fernand (La Favorite) and Mozart’s Idomeneo. In 2007 he made his début as a baritenor in La gazzetta at Rossini in Wildbad, followed a year later by the title-rôle in Otello, with Néoclès (Le Siège de Corinthe) in 2010. In 2008–2009 he joined the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where his rôles included Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) and the Steersman (Der fliegende Holländer). In 2009 he made his début at La Scala, Milan in Il viaggio a Reims. In 2010 he appeared in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette at Opera Ireland. His career has continued with engagements in the theatre and concert-hall throughout Europe, including his début in the 2012–2013 season at the Liceu in Barcelona as Hoffmann in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, and his début at the Royal Opera house in London as Rodrigo in La donna del lago.
