Jevetta Steele migrated to the Twin Cities to become a criminal lawyer but transitioned to the stage in the 1980s with her lead rôle in the international/national touring show, The Gospel at Colonus, which took her around the world and finally to Broadway. Ms Steele has enjoyed performing on many stages, from London to Brazil, Carnegie Hall to the Guthrie Theater, performing jazz, gospel, R&B and opera.

She performed the rôle of Mother Slave in his opera African Portraits with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Daniel Barenboim. The work was recorded on Warner Classics Records. She was also featured in Lokumbe’s opera God, Mississippi and a Man Called Evers with the New Jersey Symphony. Along with her stage career comes a history of film and soundtrack experience. Ms Steele is featured on the Corinna, Corinna film soundtrack as well as her most notable performance on Baghdad Café’s soundtrack with her Academy Award nominated (certified Gold in Europe) performance of Calling You.

Ms Steele has also enjoyed recording and touring with legends such as Prince, Mavis Staples, George Clinton, Natalie Merchant, Kirk Whalum and The Sounds of Blackness. After many years, Ms Steele returned to the recording industry with her new solo CD of original and classic jazz selections titled My Heart. She débuted at the Dakota Bar and Lounge in downtown Minneapolis in January 2006 and Joe’s Pub in New York City in February 2006.
