STEPHEN SONDHEIM (b 1930 )
Stephen Sondheim is the reigning master of another very American genre, the Broadway musical. Over a career that spans more than half a century, Sondheim has written both the music and lyrics for a series of shows that brought unprecedented sophistication to Broadway. Among his works are A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods.
