MICHAEL STERN

Conductor Michael Stern is founding Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the IRIS Orchestra (Germantown, Tennessee), well known for its varied programming with special emphasis on American contemporary music, and for its recordings on the Naxos and Arabesque labels. Their commitment to American composers has produced commissioned works from Stephen Hartke, Richard Danielpour, Edgar Meyer, Jonathan Leshnoff, Adam Schoenberg, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, among others.

Stern is also in his sixth season as Music Director of the Kansas City Symphony. Together they have recorded for Naxos as well as for Reference Recordings, with two acclaimed discs of the music of Sullivan, Sibelius, and Britten. Stern’s guest conducting engagements include many of the major orchestras in the United States, Europe and Asia. He is a regular visitor at the Aspen Festival and School, and for four years he was the Chief Conductor of the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra in Germany.
