The young pipa player Tang Xiaofeng is a recipient of the May the Fourth Youth Medal of Shanghai City and holder of a master’s degree in pipa from the Central Conservatory of Music. He was admitted to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music with the highest grades in 1998, where he was taught by professor Li Jingxia. At the Central Conservatory of Music, his mentor was professor Zhang Qiang.

In 2002 Tang joined the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, with which he toured Europe, America, Asia and Africa. He had also performed with the Shanghai Symphony, Shanghai Philharmonic, Beijing Symphony and China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestras. In 2004, at the invitation of the gagaku icon of Japan, Togi Hideki, Tang formed the Togi+Bao Band with him. They went on a national tour of Japan, giving more than a hundred performances to over 100,000 enthusiastic audiences. In 2009 he and his group BAO participated in the Second CCTV Ethnic Instrumental Music Competition, winning a bronze prize in the non-traditional category. Tang was also the silver award winner at the Eighth Chinese Golden Bell Awards for Music in 2011.
