CELESTINO VARELA

The Spanish bass Celestino Varela was born in Aviles and had his first musical experience in the choral society there. He took a degree in law at Oviedo, where he undertook vocal training, which he continued in Barcelona. His awards include the Premio Eugenio Marco at Sabadell, second prize in the Concurso Manuel Ausensi in Barcelona in 1998, and third prize in the 1999 Irún Concurso Luis Mariano. He made his professional operatic début as Talbot in Maria Stuarda in 1999 and has appeared in opera seasons in various important theatres in Spain and in Lisbon. His operatic rôles range from Mozart and Rossini to Verdi and Puccini, and include appearances at the Barcelona Liceu in Henry VIII by Saint-Saëns, in a cast led by Montserrat Caballé.
