SCOTT WEISS

Scott Weiss is the Sarah Bolick Smith Distinguished Professor of Music at the University of South Carolina where he conducts the USC Wind Ensemble, teaches conducting at the master’s and doctoral levels, and oversees all aspects of the university’s band program. Born in San Francisco in 1967, Scott Weiss received his musical training in trumpet performance at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and his career as a trumpet player included performances with the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, DC. He received both a master’s degree and a doctorate at the University of Illinois where he studied conducting with James Keene and Donald Schleicher. Prior to his tenure at South Carolina, Weiss served on the conducting faculty at the University of Kansas and, before that, at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. A champion of new music, Weiss has commissioned, premièred, and recorded dozens of new works by leading American composers. He also has a series of critically acclaimed recordings on the Naxos label, featuring music by American composers. His 2011 recording of the Symphony No 4 by Morton Gould (8.572629) was heralded by ArkivMusic as “its best performance on record.” In addition to his work with wind ensembles, Weiss maintains an active international guest conducting schedule. In June 2012 he made his début with the ShenZhen Symphony. He has also conducted in the Chinese cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Kunming, Hangzhou, Shenyang, Quijing, Zhuji, Huzhou, and Shaoxing; and in June 2011 he conducted a performance at the National Concert Hall in Taipei. In North America, he has performed in Canada, Mexico, and over thirty American states.
