The German tenor Erich Witte was born in Bremen in 1911. Following his debut in 1932 in his native city he sang in Wiesbaden and Breslau, and between 1938 and 1939 he was heard in New York as Froh (Das Rheingold) and Mime (Siegfried) at The Metropolitan Opera House. He sang David (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) at Bayreuth during the war and in the 1950s appeared as Loge (Das Rheingold and Die Walküre), a role he sang subsequently at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. In 1957 he produced Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at Covent Garden and sang Walther as a last minute replacement. Witte worked at the Berlin Staatsoper until 1960 and later became a producer there from 1964. Other roles included Otello, Florestan (Fidelio), and Peter Grimes. In 1970 he created the part of Harry McRae in Alan Bush’s opera Joe Hill.
