Customer Feedback

Dear Naxos:

Having only recently discovered your website, I must convey to you how greatly I admire your company's recording of Johan Helmich Roman's Drottningholm Music (8.553733). This has been recorded several times before, never very well ... , so to have it so well played by Anthony Halstead and his Uppsala ensemble is a privilege, especially given the recording's modest cost. While I nearly always cherish Naxos CDs anyhow, this one is exceptionally worthwhile.

Best wishes,

Dear Naxos,

It is no wonder you are the world's leading classical label! I have several Naxos CD's and I listen to them frequently. With your skill in providing the best classical music in North America, I would enjoy seeing some releases of my favourite composer, Dr. Thomas Augustine Arne, such as Artaxerxes or Alfred. I hope you will continue to provide beautiful classical music for years to come. Thanks for all you've done.

Bravo Naxos!

You've got the right answer to the "classical records crisis" : SACDs which are hybrid, stereo and multi-channel, and, cheaper than most of basic CDs of the other labels!

Though the anti-copy system of SACD is the only right one, the price range and the sound quality of your SACDs would make the copying mentality ridiculous!

The hybrid technology allows us to get, at once, a product for today and tomorrow with no extra expense!

In an interview, Klaus Heymann said that he likes DVD-A because there are more and more american cars DVD equipped. I would like to say that hybrid SACD can be played on CD players and DVD players as well but there's no way to listen a DVD-A with a CD player (which means in the great majority of cars which are just CD equipped). On the top of that, we can as well play a hybrid SACD on a "walkman" or a "ghetto-blaster" while a DVD-A can only be played on a DVD player and, even so, it can be a real hassle to play a DVD-A the right way with most of the DVD players. Actually, you're fair to propose both "Hi-rez" format each time.

Anyway, I already greatly appreciate Naxos for the musical quality, the innovative policy and, of course, the prices policy!

Dear Naxos,

I have just puchased the new Marcello Giordani tenor arias disc which is a new release ( to add to my other 3000 cds!!!!!) and I would like to say being a very critical listener of these discs ( I am also a professional tenor myself) this is a masterpiece!!!!!! Marcello is the world's best kept secret an incredible vocal instrument also all credit to your wonderfull production and superb engineering on this project this disc could easily warrant being charged three times the price! congratulations and very well done!!!

Dear Naxos,

I am a big fan of your label and I have written before but I must congratulate you once again! I bought the Elliot Carter disc of the Holiday Overture, Symphony No. 1 and Piano Concerto; what a fantastic disc this is! I must have played it at least 25 times in the last two weeks and it was a chance buy as I didn't know any of his works. I do try with contemporary music and many times I am shocked at how much I enjoy it and the aforementioned is proof of that.

Your new releases get my mouth watering each month and I feel like buying the whole lot!

"I feel compelled to restate my liking of the Naxos classical music library, due to your support of extremely talented musicians who are barely known (and sometimes playing barely known composers, at least to me) . It seems odd to me that shops such as Borders and Barnes & Noble, which [now] carry a reasonable but not extensive selection of your line, had no knowledge of your catalogue when I moved here (Albany, NY) from Canada a few years ago. I hope that your line continues to grow and support musicians who have spent their lives practising and playing, yet do not have the recognition they deserve."

The Naxos label is the greatest thing since CDs, [because of] the opening of repertoire that has [rarely] or never been heard. Douglas Lilburn is a find, [although] many people do not know of him. Having heard his music on vinyl, I am familiar with his work, but here are so many new works and old works that I am only recently discovering. I think Naxos is a God-send to music. I only wish Borders in Attleboro, Massachusetts would stock more and make more of your offerings available!

Keep those historical opera recordings coming. What a treasure trove! The Callas recordings are superb, and at the asking price, unbeatable. I'm still hanging out for a Welitsch/Reiner Salome and hoping for the Toscanini Otello in the near future. But if they don't eventuate I will be immensely satisfied with what Naxos has given us already.

Thanks so much for paying such close attention to Bruckner, whose day seems finally to be coming, and especially for recording the latest edition of the completed Ninth Finale, which is turning out to be some of the most remarkable music Bruckner ever wrote. I was listening to various Historical Recordings (online) and I noticed that all your ADD and AADs before 1950 sound very hissy and noisy although the website claims to have remastered them. Regardless, I have other pre-1950 recordings of other labels and they sound very clean and noise-free, as though they were DDDs. Care to clarify?

J.Y.
Australia

[Editor: Thank you for sending us your comments. Part of the reason that our historical transfers sound hissy may be due to the low quality of samples available on our website. The listening samples can give the visitor an idea of how the CD sounds, but they do not accurately portray the sound quality.

The other reason for the noise is slightly more complicated. Here is an explanation from Mark Obert-Thorn, one of our award-winning restoration engineers:
"The lower quality of the on-line samples is part of the reason; however, I think the main reason is that Naxos Historical transfers (which for the most part are done by Ward [Marston] and myself) reflect our philosophy of taking the clicks and pops out but not all the surface noise, in those cases where taking out surface noise also takes out realistic orchestral timbres.
I was just reading a review of one of my Horowitz reissues for Naxos in the latest issue of Fanfare. The writer was comparing what I did to what EMI did in their own (denoised) transfers, and said something like "There's a lot more hiss [on the Naxos], but the piano really sounds like a piano." That's what we're trying for. If your correspondent is listening to transfers from 78s that sound as quiet as DDD recordings, he is most certainly missing a lot of high frequency information."]

I purchase Naxos CDs from our local store on a regular basis. Recently I have started dipping my feet into chamber music besides the usual orchestral repertoire 'must haves'. I felt particularly astounded listening to the Brahms/Schumann Piano Quintets and the Brahms Violin Sonatas. Such glorious interpretations of these timeless classics! . . . . Thank you so much for providing classical music lovers with such a treasure trove, and may you continue with the good work.

Thank you so, so much for your now completed Bax symphonic cycle. For years I have waited for a truly justified interpretation of these glorious works. Bax is such an elusive composer. Lloyd Jones and band are evidently focused on the fight to lift him from the no-man's land he currently abides in, to the 'name in lights' podium he so desperately deserves.
Terms such as "the best" and "greatest" are not always appropriate but, given the excellence of the above, no more higher praise can be given. Sample the final few minutes of Symphony No. 6 and revel in the glory that is Naxos Bax.
Thank you SO much.

Dear Naxos: I am hoping that Naxos will record music by Wallingford Riegger (especially the Symphonies), and music by Carl Ruggles. Am looking forward to Theodore Kuchar's recordings of more Roy Harris Symphonies. When is the "Adventures of Robin Hood" Marco Polo due out in the States? I hope that in Marin Alsop's Barber series she will include the Capricorn Concerto and the Toccata Festiva for Organ and Orchestra. I have about 200 of your CDs and I do feel that your new releases are more exciting than DG, Decca, SONY, BMG and Phillips. You also have the best classical music website. I have just finished listening to the magnificent recording of English Choral Music by Lennox Berkeley which I bought on Saturday. This is the third CD of choral music by relatively neglected English composers I have bought from Naxos, the other two being the Rubbra and Finzi collections, both of which are also absolutely wonderful.

The Naxos Sousa series is an evolving epic. To date no one label has ever attempted the massive task of recording all of his music. My hat goes off to Naxos for attempting this project. So much of Sousa's music deserves a wider following in the United States. He truly was one of our great composers who wrote or transcribed music in all different genres. Naxos has begun to show us how varied Sousa's music was. Each CD so far provides a fine balance of marches and other works, providing for a concert style program. The use of Keith Brion and the band of the Royal Regiment of Artillery are also inspired choices for presenting this music. Please continue developing this wonderful series of Sousa music.

I have been a Naxos customer for many years, and have been tremendously pleased by the consistent quality and adventurous repertoire of the recordings offered. I am especially impressed by the Historical series, to unfairly name but one. But now I have reason to commend Naxos on an issue often forgotten by companies that market a product, especially one marketed in part on it's affordability - customer service. Not only are Naxos' products exemplary, so is it's treatment of it's customers.

I have on several occasions requested information on recording availability or plans to record particular pieces, and have received very pleasant personal responses. This itself is outstanding service, in my experience. Recently, I made a request that I admitted to myself, as I wrote it, was probably asking too much: I requested an extended listing of performer's voice types for a recent Naxos release where this information wasn't available by conventional cataloging sources.

Not only wasn't my request treated as excessive by Naxos USA, they went beyond my request by compiling a hand-typed list of not only the twenty-some performer's vocal types, but also their other theatrical activities. And they apologized for the modest amount of time it took, and promised to update me if they discovered any of their information was in error.

I was astounded. Naxos has, if it was possible, made me an even more loyal customer.

A great catalog of recordings and great customer service: no wonder Naxos is such a phenomenon in the recording industry.

Brava! Bravi! Bravissimo!!!

Warmest regards and thanks.

My email is in reference to the email sent by J.M. from Toronto, Ontario, Canada on January 11, 2003 . J.M. was inquiring about whether Naxos would record the complete Milhaud symphonies. The reply was that there was no plan for that. CPO has issued a 5 CD boxed set of the complete Milhaud symphonies. I thoroughly enjoy them. I don't feel badly recommending CPO to this Naxos buyer since Naxos distributes CPO.

I must say that I am a huge fan of Naxos. I have purchased over 340 Naxos CDs in the past 2 years. Your label enables me to explore with abandon. I especially like the Japanese and American Classics series, Guitar Laureate and anything French. I have also expanded my knowledge of opera and the 18th Century symphony. I began my Naxos love affair by collecting the complete 15 volume set of Chopin piano music by Idil Biret. I am also making Naxos converts out of my music-loving friends.

Keep up the terrific work. I intend to keep buying Naxos and Marco Polo until the day I die!

I am hoping that you will consider recording, perhaps as part of your splendid American Music series, Samuel Barber's opera Antony and Cleopatra.

A friend just sent me a recent Times article about the work, and I just read several listener reviews of the one recording available through amazon.com. In a nutshell, it seems as if the original version is the better of the two, but the shorter, revised version has a great love duet missing in the original. Perhaps you could combine the two to come up with an operatic performance that does justice to Shakespeare's wonderful (and wonderfully long) original and also contains that duet.

By the way, I am a big Naxos fan and have been telling all my friends to sign up with H&B Direct and check out your catalog. Keep up the fine work, which is a music lover's dream!

Thank you so very much for the Naxos label as it has helped me enormously in establishing a wonderful CD collection (or the beginnings of one). I now have over 950 classical CDs (as I only like classical music whether it be early or contemporary) and 80 per cent of them are Naxos CDs (all of which are excellent). Praise cannot be too high for your CDs, not just the wide range of music but the lovely artwork and informative notes on your CDs. Each month I await eagerly your new releases and each quarter your newsletter. The only problem is that I wish to buy all your new releases each month; they are that tempting! I usually just stick to about four or five, though! Seriously, your wide range of repertoire is so exciting that it just puts all other labels in the shade. I do not know what the majors are playing at, charging so much for their new releases (which normally number about 1 or 2 a month, if that). Their budget labels are so boring as well, just old stuff re-packaged for the umpteenth time with boring covers and usually no notes or very little, talk about short changing the customer! Please carry on with all the good work at Naxos, and I hope you will continue to serve the public for a good number of years to come, because if you don't we are all done for! Sincere wishes for the future and congratulations for achieving such an enterprising label.

Many thanks for your fix re: cookies/IE6/Windows XP. I've now been able to hear, for the first time in over 40 years, a bit of Bjorling et al in Il Trovatore. Brilliant, brilliant, and a wonderful trip down memory lane! I shall buy that set forthwith! Thanks again.

I just ran into one of your recordings of Kraus. I had never heard about him before. I do not know why. Now I can explore and enjoy very good music because of your four CDs. I am grateful for your contribution to the beauty of my world.

The sun is shining, the 'amoroso' part of the Symphony in F is playing. Life is good.

Continue your very good work.

I have been buying Naxos recordings for ten years, but since discovering naxos.com, I have bought dozens more I might not have purchased without your 'listen and buy' approach, e.g. the excellent McKay, Strong, and Carpenter issues.

Thank you so much for your website. I particularly like the option to hear complete recordings of historical series CDs - I own many of them, but it is great to sample the recording first. I can assign students to listen to recordings for their assignments - then many will purchase the recordings they listen to online.

I feel that I have to sit down here and write you a note about the "American Classics" series of recordings. I've always been attracted to this music, and have found that most recordings of it left me disappointed, both in terms of their scarcity, and their usual lackluster performances.

With some trepidation, I bought your CD of Walter Piston Violin Concertos, and was thoroughly delighted with it; it's extremely well-recorded, and performed with energy and conviction. Since then, I've bought a good two dozen titles in the series, and have gotten truly excited about the prospect of getting more of them. To me, you're not only releasing some exciting classical music, you're preserving a great part of the American heritage.

I sure hope there's more of Roy Harris' music in preparation. The disc you've already issued is perhaps the best anthology of his music I've ever heard. I'm sure you're already preparing a disc of Roger Sessions' music as well, but if you're not, please consider it.

The Naxos site is undoubtedly my favourite destination on the Internet, in fact I visit the site almost every day. There is always something to interest me. I like to dip into the composer and artist profiles and to look at the composer images, many of them were just names and music to me and it is good to put a face to them. I read the Norman Lebrecht articles with interest and like to take part in the mini-polls and the competitions. Probably the greatest thrill is being able to sample almost any of the tracks from the various collections and recording labels listed on the site; in general the whole thing is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in music and the people behind the music making.

It seems churlish to ask for more when so much is already so freely given, but I would like to see more news content particularly in regard of recordings in progress. For instance, I recall reading, some months ago, (in the BBC Music Magazine) about a new recording of Walton's Belshazzars's Feast, I think with Paul Daniel and the Leeds Festival Chorus, I've seen nothing since and I'm sure that apart from this project there must be many more that would whet the appetite of music addicts such as I.

Something else that I feel would be of interest would be a definitive list of Naxos et al best sellers world-wide, by this I don't mean that the listings should include anything released by other recording companies, just a taking into account of HNH products and the labels distributed by HNH.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all concerned with your company for the many hours of enjoyment and the resource for learning you have provided me with for a great number of years now.

I wanted to send you a quick note to let you know how much I appreciate the Naxos website. It is easy to use, and there is very copious information for me to peruse. I visit almost every week.

It was through the website that I first became really aware of Naxos. I was searching for biographical information on composers using a search engine, and was pointed to pages on Naxos' website several times. This prompted me to poke around a bit, and after I found out I was looking at a record company's website I noticed that I had already acquired some Naxos CDs, a fact had eluded me previously as I was focusing on composers, not record labels.

I highly appreciate that Naxos makes the complete contents of CDs available for online listening by registered users (only limited by copyright restrictions in a few rare cases). All other companies I know of only make snippets of various sizes available which doesn't let me fully judge the CD contents. Thanks to Naxos I don't have to buy a pig in a poke. The quality of the online recordings is above average, and the streaming works extremely well with my 56K dialup connection.

As a consequence, I am now systematically looking for Naxos recordings and have increased the proportion of Naxos CDs as a part of my total CD purchases. I am interested in 17th and 18th century composers, including some "esoteric" areas such as organ music. Naxos has recordings of lesser known composers such as the organ music of Johann Gottfried Walther that are hard to get elsewhere.

Keep up the good work.

I am an avid Naxos buyer. I find that your catalogue is quite overwhelming with a wide selection of music. One composer that has been overlooked in most classical catalogues is Darius Milhaud. I would be overjoyed if you would record his complete symphonic cycle. Other composers that deserve attention are Eduard Tubin and George Lloyd. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

I have been buying Naxos recordings for sometime now, and the recent Bax Chamber music is excellent. Being a professional musician and teacher, I can appreciate the quality of the performances very much. The Moeran Symphony in G minor is one of the best I've heard; please do some other Moeran Orchestral works. Also, the American series of Edward Macdowell's music is also very well done; in fact, the choice of lesser recorded works seems to be growing all the time. I can fully recommend this wonderful array of great music to anyone; I can hardly find the words to describe the pleasure these recordings bring to both me and my wife. I do also buy recordings as gifts for other members of my family!

I have just listened to your new recording of West Side Story.

This is quite the best performance of the piece I've heard: streets ahead of the competition. It must stand as a particular high point in the many Naxos discs which I've purchased.

For sheer energy and prodigious musicality I'd recommend this release to even the most hardened cynic: a near-perfect cast, and quite exceptional playing from the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.

Now, how about 'On the Town' with the same forces......?

I've intended for some time to write you and thank you for the superb work you have done for the classical music buying fan. The Naxos catalogue is without precedent in its selection of quality and quantity. You are to be congratulated. Give yourselves a pat on the back. Your web site is the best.

I've been buying almost exclusively Naxos cd's since 1988. Back then, it was Naxos (Pacific Music Co. Ltd.) via Enigma Classics. I believe the disc that got me hooked was "The Enigma Classics/Naxos Sampler." I still pull it out every now and then to listen.

I recently purchased one of the "Listen Learn and Grow" series. This will be for my new grandson, and it will initiate a third generation of my family to enjoy your product.

Thank you for all you have done in the past and thank you for the future. My grandson will appreciate it too.

My comment is simply that you have a class act. I don't know of any classical record company that even comes close to you in terms of quality, price, choice, and an incredibly helpful web site. I believe I own more Naxos recordings than of any other company, and you can be assured that that number will continue to increase steadily.

As you know, it is possible to listen to brief snippets of recordings on Amazon, with poor sound quality and too short to be of any help. I just listened to the entire MacDowell piano recording on your site with great sound quality. And that listening was not in lieu of purchasing the record. Quite the contrary - it made me anxious to buy a copy as soon as possible.

One thing that would be very helpful would be for you to try to get more of your CDs in the (ridiculously small) classical sections in the Borders and Barnes & Noble stores. It would be even more helpful if they could set aside a section for Naxos recordings.

I am a particular fan of 20th Century British and American music, and you are far in the lead in those areas. Please keep adding to them. You're doing a great job, and you have my enthusiastic support.

I just wanted to thank you for being enlightened enough to put audio samples online. Many media companies seem to think that if customers can get free samples, they won't bother buying the products. In my case, the samples have exposed me to lots of beautiful music that I didn't even know existed, and as a result, I've made many new Naxos CD purchases.

Dear Naxos,

I'm a 21 year old Kansan college student who has just in the past few months taken a serious interest in Classical music and I must say, I have been very pleased with your label, and I hope to be a lifetime customer. I have experimented with a number of labels, and while it goes without saying that your records are always the better bargains, I have actually found the quality of your recordings to generally be better as well! My purchases from other record labels, including big names, have been entirely unsatisfying, in fact, I'm almost considering giving them away simply to have the purity of an all-Naxos collection. I have bought a number of compilation discs from your "best of" series as well as few other odd recordings, such as a Brahms piano concerto and Beethoven's 2nd and 5th. All totaled, in the past few months I have purchased 11 of your records and they have all been truly top of the line. I plan on buying exclusively Naxos in the future as well. I thank you for nurturing my youthful interest in classical music and I look forward to a lifetime of wonderful music from you guys.

I have been an advocate for Naxos almost since its inception, and consider its project to be as important culturally as Allen Lane's Penguin paperbacks (much lamented - I remember the magical list of the '60s). To extend the comparison, the Naxos historical releases are as significant as the Penguin Classics. Naxos has given us Tolstoy in the form of Toscanini. My question is when will it give us the Dostoevsky of Furtwangler? There needs to be a balance, and Furtwangler's unforgettable live performances of Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner and Wagner need a Ward Marston. There are other conductors out there waiting for Naxos's attention - Jochum, Schuricht, de Sabata, Celibedache, Mravinski. When will it happen?

May I also put in an appeal for Schorr's "Meistersinger" and Landowska's "48", and more Szigetti - the Bach sonatas and partitas, please.

[Editor: Thank you for being an ardent supporter of Naxos.
We are adding many new Historical releases to our catalogue every month, thanks to the hard work and ingenuity of our restoration engineers. You will continue to see the legacy of many great conductors documented with state of the art audio technology.

[Klaus Heymann: Furtwaengler complete is planned but not the broadcasts. LANDOWSKA 48 and most SZIGETI. No plans for the other conductors.]

As for your requests, you'll be happy to know that in September Naxos released a Great Conductors CD of de Sabata, including Beethoven's Symphony No.6 (8.110859). Although the other conductors you mentioned will not be featured on releases before the end of the year, perhaps we will be seeing them soon. I'll pass your suggestions along.]

Hi, I must join the thousands of satisfied customers and congratulate you on giving so much at so reasonable a price. The stand out performers for me are Idil Biret with her complete Chopin series and anything by Konstantin Scherbakov. Idils' playing on the 1st and 2nd Chopin Concertos is breath-taking. Konstantins' interpretation of the preludes and fugues, op 87 by Shostakovich, is enthralling. The vision of your company is leading the way by ensuring the average person has access to the rich world of music. I just wish more stores would respond to the demand by stocking at least the current best sellers or those artists currently playing in various areas. It would be nice to be able to go out and buy an artists' work having just heard a concert, etc.--in other words, marketing to the demand. It would be good if, in each city, at least one retailer was able to stock an up to date range. Thank you once again for your dedication and insight.

Are there plans for the Capella Istropolitana to record complete sets Handel's Opp. 32 and 6? They have done so well on the two CDs currently out that a comprehensive set seems to me a natural.

I want to mention how impressed I am by the Karl Muck performances of Parsifal, which I picked up recently: how you manage to do such impressive work so consistently, and at such excellent prices, does not cease to amaze me.

Do whatever you must to persuade Beatrice Long to record more Scarlatti.

Her Naxos CD establishes her as one the greatest of all Scarlatti performers.

I cannot recall so many new revelations in the space of one recording, in sonata after sonata, since I first listened to the 1952 Kirkpatrick recordings forty years ago. Understand the significance of this comparison: Kirkpatrick was introducing me to Scarlatti; since then, I have heard thousands of performances of Scarlatti sonatas and was familiar with every sonata on Beatrice Long's CD when I sat down to listen to it.

That was four weeks ago and still I am out of my mind. Please, do whatever you must...

Dear friends from Naxos,
I'm a 19 year old student of music (composition and regency) and I live here in Brazil.
I'm so grateful with this label! Your policy of prices and good artists like Jando, Bruhl, and my favorite, Idil Biret, makes this label special. I'm not rich, really I'm a little poor guy who makes every kind of sacrifice to become a musician. The "focus" of my learning and future career is composition. I love and give all my forces to this "laboratory of sounds" like Thomas Mann says in "Dr. Faust." No, I'm not a kind of "Leverkunn." I'm only a music lover.
I always have many exercises to do, like music analysis. And here, Naxos enters into my musical learning.
I have no money to buy DG discs, or even Teldec, Harmonia mundi, etc. to study the music with the score. So, always I prefer to buy a Naxos disc, and then, I can continue my job. Yes, you offer quality and good prices, and, first of all, musical education to me, to everyone who wants to know more about the music, and for those who admire this blessed art.

Now I'm buying the Schubert Deustche Lied Edition. And I have some questions that I couldn't find an answer to here in the site. How many volumes of this series are available to buy? I only have 4 volumes (1, 3, 4, 7). Will this collection record all of Schubert's lieder? Or only that which was "inspired" from a German poet? Will this wonderful project keep going on?

I hope I won't bother you with these questions. Please answer, if possible.

Thanks, Naxos, with all my heart.

Sincerely,

I'd just like to thank Naxos for the exceptional job it is doing for classical music. You pride yourselves on delivering great music from the great and the lesser known composers -- and outstanding quality -- not just "making a buck." Your selection is truly wonderful! Question: Several labels, like Philips and Decca, have artist series such as 'The art of Alfred Brendel' on Philips, 'Best of Wilhelm Backhaus' on Decca, etc.

I recently purchased the Naxos CD featuring pianist Michael Ponti playing 2 Liszt works as well as the Brahms variations (8.550408).

Ponti's playing is spectacular and the recording superb - I can't find much on Ponti in the Catalogues (except for several early Turnabout and Vox recordings). Have you other Cds available featuring this artist?

[Editor: Thank you for your interest in our recordings. At this time, the Liszt and Brahms album is the only recording by Mr. Ponti in our catalogue. However, please feel free to check back with us from time to time, as we release about 30 new albums each month. Naxos is a repertoire-driven label, rather than being driven by artists. While we occasionally do have artists record a series of works for us, we do not feature artists in "Best of" compilations.]

First of all, thank you for your time. I have been a great fan of Naxos for several years now and am especially fond of your small, but lively collection of recordings of Johan Nepomuk Hummel's music. I would very much like to know if more music of Hummel's is in the works for Naxos release - possibly a rumored second volume of Piano Sonatas by Hae-won Chang. The most wonderful thing about Naxos, aside from the great recording sound and performances at reasonable price, has to be the label's efforts to expose the beautiful works of lesser known composers. Johan Nepomuk Hummel is a hidden gem of the classical period and I commend those responsible at Naxos for taking the initiative to reveal his skill (and the skill of the chosen performers). Any information on upcoming Hummel productions would be greatly appreciated. Once again, thank you for your time and keep up the fantastic work.

[Editor: Thank you for being a devoted Naxos customer. Right now we have no news concerning a second volume of Hummel piano sonatas, although other Hummel works are scheduled to be recorded in 2003. In the mean time, you can find a complete discography of Hummel's works that are available on Naxos by searching the catalogue at Naxos.com. You might be interested in the Hummel Piano Concertos recorded by Hae-won Chang, catalog #8.223107 and #8.550837.]

I own a copy of your CD "Berceuse, Music of Peace and Calm" and am trying to obtain sheet music for cut #5 Wiegenlied by Bernhard Flies.

I hope that you might help accomplish this.

Thank you.

[Editor: I have found several options for you concerning Wiegenlied by Flies. The background of the work certainly could make it hard to find the score. Wiegenlied often is mis-attributed to Mozart , and I believe it actually was assigned a Kochel number. Additionally, it has an alternate title: "Schlafe, mein Prinzchen" ("Sleep, My Prince"). When looking for the sheet music, you may find it under several combinations of composers and titles! While I could not find the exact arrangement on the recording, here are several that I did find. You may be able to find more with this new information.

That recording of the Haydn quartets op. 3 nos. 3-6 by the celebrated Kodaly Quartet is magnificent! But, will NAXOS release a recording of Haydn op. 3 nos. 1 & 2 and op. 2 nos. 3 & 5? If so, when and will it be done by the wonderful Kodaly ensemble? I'm waiting.

[Editor: The Kodaly Quartet already has recorded and released Haydn's complete string quartets for Naxos. However, I do not believe that op. 2, no.3 & 5 or Op.3, no.1 & 2 will be recorded. The selections from op. 2 are not considered true string quartets, while the selections from op. 3 are believed to have been written by another composer. Check out the Kodaly Quartet's page in our artist gallery for details on the existing recordings as well as catalogue numbers. If you cannot find the recordings in your local music store, they should be able to special order them for you. You also might want to check online CD retailers.]

Besides expressing appreciation for the recordings I've purchased for my own pleasure, I wanted to let you know that most of the patients at our health centre enjoy them as well. On any given day music from some 6 CDs is played in our treatment rooms and I can only remember one negative comment from someone. Typically we play piano works of Mozart, Beethoven and Mendelssohn. I am particularly enjoying collecting the complete cycle of piano concerti by Mozart performed by Mr. Jeno Jando.

I look forward to introducing our patients to more of your recordings in the near future.

First of all I am quite pleased that Naxos has decided to start making recordings with American Orchestras. It is high time a music company did so. The recording of Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony can stand with just about any other one in the catalog. I think it is better than some of the older recordings that other companies charge more than twice as much for these days. I hope that Naxos will continue this project and give American Orchestras the chance to be heard.

When I was writing another thanks giving letter about the Bach's transcriptions by Enno Voorhorst, which is really excellent, I have just found the Gallen recording of Giuliani, which is really a must. The sound, the selection of pieces, the strength of the interpretation, the appropriateness of the instrument, the rhythm really worth listening. Is the best Giuliani I have listened to.
Thank you for this new jewel.

Hi there at Naxos,

I'm a recent buyer of Naxos CDs and I want to congratulate you for your Brahms four-hand piano series. I must confess that previously I dismissed Naxos recordings as second best at the most until I read some Classicstoday.com reviews that enthused about some of your recordings. So, being a big fan of Brahms' symphonies, I bought Silke-Thora Matthies/Christian Kohn's rendition of Brahms' 1st symphony, which is marvelous! Then I bought the same duo's Serenades 1 and 2 -a sparkling delight!

By the way, your newsletters with audio samples are a winner.

As a collector of ballet music, I've been very impressed by the Naxos label, particularly by the work of conductor Andrew Mogrelia. I have his Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia and Sylvia - they are uniformly excellent. I appreciate the fact that the Naxos CDs offer the complete score, not just highlights. The tempo is even and unhurried - I can visualize the dancers moving to the music (which is impossible with many "concert hall" versions of the music).

What I would love to see from Naxos is more of the Bournonville repertory, specifically Napoli and Flower Festival in Genzano. I am noticing Napoli in more and more of the repertories of American ballet companies - for instance, Ballet San Jose did the complete ballet last year, and the School for American Ballet did much of Act 3 for their Spring show. I would love to have this lively and colorful music on CD. And I know Naxos would do it well!

Dear Naxos,
I've written to you at least several times before thanking you and praising you for your absolute genius. And recently, you've made me love you even more. Your new release, JAPANESE ORCHESTRAL FAVORITES, features my favorite composer, Akira Ifukube. I have an extensive collection of Ifukube's music mainly on expensive Japanese import CDs that are usually hard to find in the US. How excited I was, however, to learn that my favorite (by far) classical label was coming out with music from my favorite composer. I mean, how perfect is that?
I sincerely hope Naxos will continue to release more works of Ifukube on your incomparable label. I have always strongly contended Naxos is the most consistent classical label in terms of quality of recordings, talent of artists, repertoire, and of course, value. You folks are the best.
Thank you for the many years of superiority.

"I have just purchased two more of your American Classics recordings. Outside of CRI and New World Records, I know of no other recording company that has devoted time and effort to bring American music to the listening public. For reasons that I do not fully understand, American music is neglected in its homeland. Most estimates that I have seen indicate that 85% of the music played by American symphony orchestras and American classical music radio stations is by European composers. The Naxos American Classics initiative is helping to offset this incredible and disgraceful imbalance.

Dear Naxos,

I would like to congratulate you on your Gramophone Award for the excellent Vaughan-Williams recording with the Maggini Quartet (8.555300). I also think the Elgar Piano Quintet, with Peter Donohoe, is a magnificent recording - one of my favourite CDs. May I suggest that the Maggini Quartet and Peter Donohoe would be the number one choice to perform the wonderful Piano Quintet of Frank Bridge? This would be a very attractive addition to your English chamber music series, and I would love to hear their rendering of this work. The one recording I have of it is frustratingly second-rate and I don't believe it has ever been recorded again.

I would also like to say that the Arthur Foote chamber music Volume 3 (Naxos American Classics 8.559039) is absolutely brilliant! I would recommend every lover of beautiful music to rush out and buy this as it is some of the best music I have ever heard - the more I listen to it the more I love it - very exciting to find an unknown composer who is so deserving of discovery. Are there any more of his works, chamber or otherwise, to be released? (I also have and enjoy vols. 1 and 2, but the third is the best - material, performance and recording.)

Thank you very much,

Yours sincerely,

About 20 yrs ago, I started to listen to classical music. In that period, LPs were very expensive for a student like me. The cheapest tape I could afford was published you - all packed in a silver background and blue text case. I remember the first music I listened to was Beethoven's Symphony no.6 which was performed by a Hungarian orchestra. It is one of my two favourite versions. I started with high grade but in low price music from that period and build up my own musical sense. I have full sets of those tapes. Of course I can now only buy CDs.

Thanks from your fan whom grow up with you.

I discovered classical music late in life, but, I discovered the excellent quality, and superior performances of naxos recordings, early on. A special thank you, to Klaus Heymann, and the naxos family, for making such a superb selection of classical music available and affordable, to the pauper, as well as the pompous. I appreciate each and every one of you, very much. I wish naxos music continued growth and success in the years to come.

This isn't really a question, but a release of yours really amazed me.

I recently acquired the Schubert Impromptus 8.550260, and was completely amazed the brilliance of the pianist.

Dear friends at Naxos:

The world would be a better place if everyone listened to Naxos. I visit your website daily to explore your vast library of classical music in search of new musical experiences. I am in the process of learning about Franz Schubert. I recently purchased the compact disc featuring the Piano Sonata D.664.

Wow! It is so beautiful. It is music therapy for me because I listen to it on my way to and from work. You can not overestimate classical music's value as a cure for road rage. It really helps take the edge off of erratic behavior by other motorists.

Thank you for making it possible to accumulate the world's most beautiful music at the world's most beautiful price.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your exceptional website. Your decision to provide full audio samples from your albums is much appreciated. At other labels the listener is lucky to get a 30 or 60 second sample. Your commitment to full audio samples shows that you take pride in the quality of your recordings, and that you trust your customers to recognize this quality. I have bought almost all the really good recordings you have on Classical Guitar. I have been immensely inspired by Norbert Kraft's playing and transcriptions (the Villa-Lobos record [8.553987] sets the standard by which all recordings be judged).

I am requesting that Norbert help transcribe and perform an album of Debussy's works: Danse profane and sacre for harp and strings, petite suite, girl with the flaxen hair, the cake walk etc. I feel these works will sound very nice on the guitar. I will be interested in the score for these transcription too.

I would also like to commend Antigoni Goni on her performance of the John Duarte [8.554554] and Barrios [8.554558] music very beautifully played...Because of you guys in Naxos I am seriously playing the classical guitar also and even bought a new guitar Made in Madrid by Manuel E Hijos.

Naxos CDs have long been part of my collection of classical music. Having been a performing musician for many of my 71 years, I prefer to purchase recordings of superior performances. Recently, I have been purchasing DVD Audio recordings since I find the sound field to be much more authentic that stereo.
Your recent release of the Vivaldi Concerti is one of the best examples of this technology.
Several months back, you indicated another DVD Audio disc to be forthcoming, and I anxiously await the availability of that recording. It is my fervent wish that you continue to produce more recordings in 96/24 DVD Audio.
Many years ago, I purchased a CD of Schubert's Trout Quintet which had as an extra a few of the "Moments Musicaix" performed by Jeno Janos. Upon my first auditioning of this CD; after the Trout was finished, I was amazed by the excellent performance of pieces I had both played and taught. It required several repeats on the spot to this wonderful performance. It became apparent that a superior performance did not necessarily come with a 'major' label!
I have since purchased a large number of Naxos CDs for their quality of performance, contrary to the generally held belief that the major labels had the best artists. Notoriety does not mean quality in many cases.
Again, I was most impressed with your first DVD Audio disc and look forward to many more.
Finally, thank you for finding artists who are most excellent performers and bringing them to our attention.

Just wanted you to know what a pleasure the Flagstad/Melchior TRISTAN [8.110068-70] and the 1939 Serafin VERDI REQUIEM [8.110159] are. It's obviously no coincidence that both were restored by Ward Marston. These two are among the finest restorations I've ever heard -- and Mr. Marston is to be congratulated. Naxos does serious music lovers a real service with these.

By the way, are you aware of the 1939 or 1940 Gigli/dalMonte BUTTERFLY which was available in the early 1960's on EMI's Great Recordings of the Century. It's a brilliant recording and would make a great addition to the Naxos catalog.

Dear Naxos,

I have a few questions. I was wondering if there were any plans for you to commission a full version of I Puritani perhaps with Luba Orgonasova? She appears singing an excerpt on your opera A-Z CD which I have and I know she stars in your recording of La Sonnambula which I plan to get.

One other question, would it be possible for you to include more details of when the Historical recordings were made? Sometimes there's no mention of it.

Actually that's about it as most of my other questions are answered in your FAQ section. I would like to say however, how much I have enjoyed your Historical series so far - I have mostly listened to them on the website, but I plan to buy loads soon - I think what you have done is really incredible, the sound quality on some of the recordings sounds brilliant.

Well done for using Media Player and not RealPlayer - it seems to work much better in my experience. Keep up the good work.

Hello,

I'm enjoying your 21st century classics series, including the rather unusual operas. But I'm a little curious as to what your inclusion mechanism is. For example, Macmillan's Veni Veni Emmanuel (8.554167) is an excellent recent work by a young composer- why not move it into the new category and get some exposure to a superb but hard-to-find disc? Disc 7 of your Lutoslawski series was wonderful- having all 3 postludes together was a good move. Are you going to bundle them into a white box collection soon?

Thanks, best regards,

V. Spicer
Winnipeg, Canada

[The inclusion mechanism is that a composer should not have been recorded much before and be relatively unknown out side his home country. Macmillan already had a lot of exposure. But we'll give your suggestion some thought. As for the Lutoslawski, there will be 9 volumes altogether ... I am not sure we'll give them the White Box treatment but we'll do some sort of box. Klaus Heymann]

Thank you so much! I am a Christian seminary student who recently graduated with an undergraduate music major in Iowa. I just wanted to say that Naxos is indeed a fine company, but it does lack in one major thing. Several of its recordings don't come with the libretto translated or at all. I recently bought your Red Army Choir disc (which the music was fantastic) but I was very disappointed when there wasn't the words of the Russian songs and an accompanying English translation to each one. This would have been ideal! Alas I do not buy many of your choral or operatic works because of this. Your company would really topple the competition if only you would provide librettos and English translations for ALL of your operas, choral, and other works that contain chant or singing. Hopefully other people will agree with me and perhaps your good company can do something about this unfortunate error.

[Thank you for your message. Yes, it is certainly true that we do not always provide all of the texts that many customers would like. The reason for this is simply economic. Translations and lengthy booklets are expensive to produce. For our CDs to remain at the current price we have to limit our costs as best we can. One solution we are working on is to put texts on the website. We have begun to provide opera libretti in our 'Learning Zone': http://web02.hnh.com/libretti/] Over time, we hope to greatly expand this page, including song texts and translations whenever possible.]

Hi there. I've been having a dig around on the Naxos website (which is excellent) and really want to get various pieces of music, especially after listening to Svendsen's Icelandic Melodies on Radio 3 one Sunday morning recently.

I've had a dig around on various of the retailer websites which you link to and they have got some of the CDs, but not all - just for starters I want to buy Svendsen 8553106, Mendelssohn 8554725 ("Complete works for violin & piano"), the Arthaus Musik 100 003 DVD, and the Maggini Quartet Vaughan Williams String Quartets 1 & 2.

In addition, the retailers websites aren't desperately good insofar as their shopping carts tend not to work with Internet Explorer 6 unless you muck around with certain settings which most users will not know about yet alone even want to change. Clearly this make online purchasing very difficult. As for high-street stores, few of the major chains carry many Naxos titles in their shops and so it is hardly worth trying them.

It's basically frustrating not to be able to buy from Naxos direct - distributors have got incomplete catalogues and websites that don't work properly, and it would be nice just to be able to see a CD or DVD on the Naxos website and click on a button to add it to a shopping cart - have a look at the likes of www.play247.com for really good online shopping which gets me spending large amounts. Impulse buying from website visitors would, I'm sure, give you significantly increased sales. Is there any chance that Naxos will sell direct from its website?

Thanks,

[Anthony Anderson, Managing Director of Select Music and Video Distribution Ltd., responds:

We have made the decision not to supply Naxos CDs to the public directly as we have long valued and supported classical retailers and will continue to do so. Furthermore, we are very much about servicing the retail sector and recognise that there are several mail order companies which provide a more personal service to their customers than that for which we are set up. However, we do work with a number of direct mail companies, many of whom have their own websites from which the public can purchase Naxos CDs.

MDT mail order - http:/www.mdt.co.uk , for example, has an extremely extensive range of products and a dedicated Naxos search engine and will be happy to order any product for you which is not in their database.

In regard to high street stores, Naxos products can be found in HMV, WH Smiths, Virgin, MVC and Andys - amongst others. Generally, if you cannot find the particular product you want these stores can order for you.

I should like to thank you for your continued support for Naxos. If I can assist you further please do not hesitate to contact me.]

Dear Webmaster,

You are the only label I know of that allows subscribers to listen to complete CDs on your website. This probably took some guts from your marketing dept., and since I have been listening to Naxos CDs now on a regular basis, I think its only fair to spend some time to give you this feedback.

Since I have started listening to Naxos CDs on your website, I have bought some titles after listening to them, and in addition 8 Naxos CDs made it to my 'want list', 5 of which made it to my top 10.

What is probably of importance to you is that in all cases these CDs were purchased or added to my 'want list' only after I listened to them first on your website. So in my case, your marketing strategy is definitely working. Allowing me to listen to entire CDs on your website greatly improves the chances that I will buy some of these CDs from you. In addition it allows me the opportunity to explore unknown repertoire, and for that I am very thankful, even if it does not always lead to sales for you.

To conclude, thanks for providing me with such a good listening opportunity, and I hope that this privilege will continue to be beneficial to my ears as well as to your profits.

I just wanted to compliment you on your website. There's so much great information- especially for people new to Classical (well, "serious") music. I especially enjoyed reading through your "How to enjoy a live concert". Most musicians forget that many people do not understand the rules of concert-going. Anyway, just wanted to say that I've really enjoyed your website.

Thanks again

I have recently bought the White Box set of Sibelius Symphonies. Having listened to Sibelius' work for over 40 years in the concert hall and on disc I am bound to say that the White Box set represents the finest performances and the best recordings I have ever heard. I have been thrilled with my acquisition which will give me a great deat of lasting pleasure. My congratulations to Petri Sakari and the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra for their performances and to Naxos for the supreme quality of the recordings.

Hi,

Yesterday I heard a recording of some arrangements of Bellini's Operas. The only information I was able to glean was Naxos's CD number. As an afterthought I decided to have a look on the web to see if I could gather further details with a view to purchasing a copy. It took me all of three minutes to locate the title, plus other interesting information on the CD.

A very good web site, and my congratulations. This is a good example of the usefulness to which the Internet can be put.

Cheers,

Dear Webmaster,

This isn't a question. It is a thank you.

Thank you for recording all of Josef Strauss's wonder work! He is my favorite composer and I am very happy to (finally) be able to listen to all of his music. I have Vols 1-20 and look forward to 21-26!

BTW: I particularly like the picture of Josef that you have on your web site. Sure looks familiar!

Dear Sirs,
Last month I bought 9 new CDs, one among them which made me especially happy, the one belonging to JOAQUIM SERRA (8.555.871), an excellent Catalan musician. And I had feel doubly delighted as I had made the acquaintance of this compatriot many years ago.
My congratulations once more for the great plenty, variety and high quality of your issues.
With my best wishes.
Very faithfully yours

"Greetings! I have been buying, and enjoying thoroughly, the music from your catalogue for four or five years. I would, first of all, like to extend my gratitude for the introduction to composers whose music I may otherwise have never encountered were it not for Naxos. I get rather tired of classical music magazines constantly referring to your prices in their reviews. Though the price is definitely a plus, I buy your recordings for their quality.

Now, on to my main query. I was wondering if you were planning on recording the symphonies and string quartets of Alan Rawsthorne. I have collected the entire series of his music so far, and as a result of much listening, he has become my favorite British composer. Thanks in advance for your reply."

[We will definitely be recording more Rawsthorne; however, it is likely that the next to come will be the piano & orchestra works, since we are beginning a series of British Piano Concertos. Naxos A&R dept]

With reference to the Naxos classical CDs I would inform you that I am so delighted with each disc I buy (direct from Crotchet Mail Order) that I am compelled to write to you in the hope that you will pass on my comments to the Head of Naxos (Mr Klaus Heymann) or the appropriate people...

Naxos seems to get the chemistry right from the word go and in fact your discs are getting even better. Congratulations to all at Naxos for their enterprising choice of repertoire whilst giving amazing value for money, good notes, nice artwork cover design and the spark collectors need to acquire more discs. Your marketing is absolutely spot on. No other company does this in 2001 and I wish you every success possible in the future and I hope Naxos will still be around for many years to come.

Your new releases have my mouth watering every time, especially your American Classics and Historical range, I wish I could afford to buy every new disc! BBC Music Magazine and Gramophone promote you well and I subscribe to both publications.

Again, all the best,

A happy listener and avid fan of Naxos,

Comments on our recordings of Edvard Grieg's piano music:

Lyric Pieces (8.550450): "Lyric Pieces, played by Balazs Szokolay, made me play the piano again and take lessons, at the age of 42. I bought the CD, which inspired me to buy the Complete Book of Lyrical Pieces for piano. It completely brought back (after raising 4 children) my joy in playing." -- J. James-Huisman, The Netherlands

Piano Music Vol. 9 (8.553395): "Does a Norwegian Pianist feel the true spirit of the greatest Norwegian composer? After listening to Einar Steen-Nokleberg I think so. He took me back to my childhood when my first contacts with music were with a selection of the Lyric Pieces: I loved March of the Trolls from op.54." -- G. Giannone, Italy

Complete Piano Music on 14 CD's (8.501401): "After hearing these records, I bought the piano scores and am now studying some of them. The Peer Gynt numbers are my favourite; I had only heard the orchestral versions before. They are played beautifully. However, it is difficult to choose favourites among such a treasure of music." -- R. Robichaud, Canada

Piano Music vol. 2 (8.550882): "Grieg's piano music vol.2 is just wonderful! The pianist Einar Steen-Nokloberg plays it with so much passion! The 19 Norwegian Folksongs, op. 66 is the best. True Norwegian music!! With a pianist like Einar you can almost be certain - that's the way it must sound!!" -- J. Botes, South Africa.

Piano Music, Vol. 9 (8.553395): "I purchased this disc simply out of curiosity but it quickly became a favorite of mine. The Lyric Pieces are lovely works, each one of unique character. I've listened to several other pianists' interpretations of these pieces since buying this recording and none seems to compare with the sensitivity of Steen-Nokleberg's performances." -- L. Matheson, Germany

Piano Music Vol. 13 (8.553399): "Steen-Nokleberg's wonderful recording of Three Piano Pieces EG105, brought back the memories of my studies, playing these pieces. These tiny pieces are beautifully played, and Nokleberg's interpretation gives me goosebumps because he manages to picture a young composer on the search for his own style." -- B. Isaksen, Norway

Cello Sonata, Op. 36 / Piano Sonata, Op. 7 (8.550878): "Grieg's piano music by Steen-Nokleberg belongs amongst NAXOS' best. However, my favourite is the Sonata op. 7 interpreted by Havard Gimse on NAXOS 8.550878. His juvenile attack in the fast movements, contrasted with beautiful lyric phrasing in the Andante molto, make it a masterpiece of the romantic piano literature." -- M. Brack, Germany

Lyric Pieces Vol 2 (8.550577): "This album is special to me because Grieg is among my favourite piano composers. The melodies sound simple but you can sense that they are technically complicated. Balazs makes these simple and folk-like pieces sound so inspiring and relaxing. Absolutely enjoyable piano playing and wonderful pieces." -- E-L Law, Malaysia

"Dear Naxos,

Being a fanatic historic recording fan, I cannot thank you enough for providing reissues at a budget price, and bravo to your engineers, for in most cases, the sound is excellent!

Being a string player, I'm particularly disturbed that Biddulph has wound up its business. They have been perhaps 'THE' company where William Primrose's recordings are concerned. I'm very sad that with Biddulph's closing, most of his recordings will not be available anymore. In my humble opinion, I think your company should reissue his records, for his artistry should be heard! And many others like Shumsky, Zimbalist, Elman, Milstein etc.

Again, bravo for your excellent contribution! I hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerely
C. L."

"To Whom It May Concern,

I just want to let you know that I recently purchased a copy of 5.110001 Vivaldi: The Four Seasons and I think it is one of the best DVD-Audio Discs I have seen to date. Mr. Juritz and the London Mozart Players deliver some very fine performances of the "Four Seasons" concertos and leave me wanting to hear some more of the double concertos. The pictures on the video part of the disc are quite nice, and a change of pace from some other DVD-A discs, like the ones from Teldec where all you see is a copy of the front cover. I think Naxos as usual will lead the way in this format. All I can say is I hope that Mr. Juritz and the London Mozart Players will do some more recordings like this. This is a great disc, and at $12.99 an incredible bargain, just the sort of thing I have come to expect from Naxos. Thank You.

Sincerely,"

I've just received your 'La Boheme' CD with Gigli and Albanese. Excellent! It's good to see a company interested in re-issuing all these old masterpieces of recorded vocal music. I have quite a few 'Naxos' recordings now and am enjoying them in my 'old age'. They offer good quality and value ofr money. I hope at some time in the future you will do a CD of Licia Albanese - one of the most underrated of all soprano's - and include her best (studio) recordings. I have the
'Butterfly' - which is live and not very good quality. I have also a 'classic FM' track of her singing 'Doretta's Dream', which is excellent. These are the type of tracks I would love to hear of her....Keep issuing the 'old ones' and I'll have plenty to listen to well into my old age!! yours sincerely

Dear Sir,
I find Naxos to be a wonderful Label. You have quality recordings of many of the significant classical music works which I want for my collection. At the very affordable price of ¢G4.99, I am able to try unfamiliar works and composers and thus expand my musical knowledge and more importantly, my musical enjoyment. Naxos provide such an extensive and increasingly comprehensive range of classical music from all periods, that I am able to build my collection to include all the pieces of music I want. Through Naxos I have been able to explore the world of classical music and have discovered some beautiful music. Thank you to Naxos for continuing to provide such a wonderful range of classical music at such a cheap price. Brilliant, please keep going!!

"Hello,
I just recently picked up your new disc of Vanhal's Missa Pastoralis in G and Missa Solemnis in C. What wonderful works and what wonderful performances! The orchestra used, The Aradia Ensemble, use period instruments, don't they (no mention is made on the packaging)? Naxos usually do not use period instruments, but as a period instrument fan, I was excited to hear that trademark sonority when I first played the disc.
The conductor, Uwe Grodd, really seems to have an affinity for Vanhal (I also have his excellent disc of Vanhal symphonies on Naxos). I hope Naxos will bring us more of Maestro Grodd conducting this exciting, but overlooked composer."

"Dear Webmaster,

Just a brief note to say that Mr. Chaplin's playing of the CPE Bach sonatas is quite exceptional. Playing with such fine gradations of sound I had thought was a lost art. "What a great joy to find that my favorite label for classical music has grown to such a lofty position in the world. I am always amazed at how you do it. You bring some of the lesser performed pieces with some of the finest orchestras to our stereos. I remember buying my first Naxos CD and thinking 'Wow wonderful program notes, great orchestra, and a fine piece of music besides, all for less that ten bucks' I have well over two hundred classical CDs and a full third are Naxos and that will only continue to grow, especially now that you offer such great new composers as Philip Glass and great lesser known composers as Pleyel and Vanhal. Don't ever change!!!

Again thank you and Bravo!"

"I just wanted to say how good I think your site is: it's well laid out, easy to browse, and the length of streaming samples is excellent, giving a real taste of the music rather than some of the shorter samples available on other sites.

This is the only classical site I use, it's the only one I need. Please keep up the high standards on the site even if the number of purchases made online may not be high themselves. This may be because, as in my case, I tend to listen to recordings online to decide what I want, and then buy Naxos from a shop rather than over the Web...no doubt having a site like this one boosts your sales, though.

Thank you,"

"Dear Sir/Madam,

My God. I was going to send you a long overdue thank you note and then I just read the comments already on your feedback site. They have taken the words out of my mouth. Best classical record label in the world by a country mile? I think so. If I make the following points incoherently and badly punctuated, it is a combination of breathless enthusiasm, the late hour and a Dreamcast keyboard...

  1. I, like one of your other correspondants, started buying your discs over a decade ago from Woolworths, for whom, oddly, I still work. If only we still had the franchise!
  2. My classical collection includes roughly 200 Naxos discs, plus other independents eg Chandos, Hyperion, BIS, not to mention your own superlative Marco Polo. Like most people, I have a limited music budget, divided between rock/metal/pop/experimental and classical. It is testament to the recent very high quality of your records that I havn't bought a non-classical record in 2001.
  3. The US series is god-like. The presentation values alone are worth a fiver. The repertoire is mind-boggling...June's new discs are already on order. The Bejamin Lees disc is one of the most affecting I have ever heard. Also the McKay disc is a real favourite
Congrats to Marin Alsop on her Bournemouth gig. Get her to do some Amy Beach or Libby Larsen.
  4. My favourite Naxos disc of all time, a tough call, would have to be the Respighi 'of Romes'' which ranks in my all-time top five discs from any company.
  5. Your Scarlatti series has turned me on to a composer I was formerly resistant to. Thankyou.
  6. The 21st Century series is another masterstroke. New music at an affordable price is very rare. I realise hard economics dictates what a company even as adventurous as yourselves can do, but how about a few themed contemporary discs that would certainly fill niches. For example Aussie/NZ, with Antony Watson. Douglas Lilburn, Jenny MacCloed, Gillian Whitehead, Carl Vine etc or contemporary women eg Sally Beamish,Diane Burrell, Libby Larsen, Deirdre Gribben etc.
  7. Are you trying to bankrupt me...dipping my toe into Naxos Jazz and World and very much enjoying the experience.
  8. Marco Polo...In a world of Westlife and Hearsay, just how lucky are we to have this label...
  9. Arthur Honnegger, a genius who's star is sadly very much in the descendant. Any plans for future recordings? And, relatedly, Lili Boulanger?
  10. If you could do a Naxos budget range of death/grind/doom/black metal I would come and kiss you all individually as this was my first love. I'm only half joking. Incidentally, who said metal fans were morons with no cultural taste?
Right, that's me about done. Apologies for droning on, but that represents over a decade's worth of thanyous for being just the best. Hears to many more years to come!

Yours faithfully,"

Hi again,

I've been enjoying your historical collection, especially the performances by rachmaninov, heifetz and casals. i do have one question about the elgar/walton (8.110939): what magic did mark obert-thorn use to extract such a wonderfully clean sound from the elgar tracks? the surface noise which i've been becoming so used to as a reassuring backdrop was almost totally gone, and the orchestra leaps out. Were these mastered onto tape rather than a 78 pressing, and does that account for the difference?

I like the idea of having some restoration notes, especially when the job is so well done. A great deal of the appeal of these re-issues is the considerable talent that's gone into bringing them new life on CD.

Thanks again for the great work- i'm just breaking in "cello Sonata" by Samuel Jones on the American Classics. lovely stuff!

Bravo to you and the engineer who made the transfers to disc.

"I would like to congratulate Naxos on their excellent broad and enlightening range of repertoire, and making it available at an easily affordable price; a factor which certainly helps me in "exploring" unfamiliar ground without the worry of gambling ¢G15+. A letter in the April BBC Music magazine was rather damning of Naxos, so in addition to Mr. Heymann's reply, I felt an independent reply was due. My letter got published in the May issue (Letter of the Month no less!), along with several other letters supporting the cause of Naxos. As my letter was necessarily edited, I thought it would be useful for Naxos to see the full version, pasted below. Keep up the Excellent work!

Yours sincerely,"

Peter Marsh

"Dear Sir or Madam,
Astonished as I was by Adam Smith's condemnation of the Naxos label (Letters, BBC Music, April 2001), I feel a satisfied consumer's point of view is in order in addition to that of Klaus Heymann's reply. Naxos recordings in my collection purchased from up to 10 years ago still get regular listening, including the fantastic (Penguin Guide 3-star rated) Prokofiev Piano Concertos by Kun Woo Paik and the Polish NRSO with Anton Wit. As with much other core repertoire, I have not felt the need to buy more expensive versions by 'world-class' artists as my financial means have improved since my student days in the early 90's. Can George Tintner and the RSNO be really classed as third-rate artists? I've found their readings of the Bruckner symphonies enlightening and thrilling, for a composer I'd previously avoided due to unfamiliarity and prohibitive costs of recommended recordings. Had Mr. Smith failed to notice the justifiably shining reviews in BBC Music (and other reputable magazines, notably Gramophone) of the Bax symphonies and orchestral and chamber works by Lutoslawski, Rawsthorne, Rautavaara and others? Naxos' exploration of lesser known 20th Century repertoire and contemporary music has certainly helped broaden my musical outlook, an exploration which would have had less scope had I limited my purchases to full price labels and world-class artists. This has also led me to investigate composers on other labels, once newly discovered by 'suck it and see' buys of Naxos recordings. Callas and Domingo are or were great artists, but time moves on and new artists and ensembles deserve a chance to become great. Exposure in issues by enterprising labels must surely be of benefit to the future of music making?

Yours sincerely,"

'Defenders of the Faith'
"I read Adam Smith's letter (April) with considerable dismay. I have a CD collection which includes several recordings on the Naxos label. I tend to buy CDs which have received critical acclaim in publications such as BBC Music Magazine. As a music lover, I believe that the only logical way to build a worthwhile collection is to buy recordings which sound the best, regardless of cost."

S.H., Sheffield, UK
Published in 'Letters', BBC Music Magazine, May, 2001

"As someone who never learnt to play or read music but loves the noise it makes and listens a great deal, Naxos has changed my life. Its great value is to put works before great artists and big names and produce, at a price all can afford, recordings of works seldom if ever done by anyone else or offered at a king's ransom."

S.B., Taunton, Somerset, UK
Published in 'Letters', BBC Music Magazine, May, 2001

The above were published in response to this letter to the same magazine:

'Naxos Phenomenon'
"In reading Brian Hunt's article about the remarkable success of Naxos (April), I just wonder how many of their recordings will be still listened to in 20 years' time. Many of those I have purchased have been lacking in quality of recording and performance.

"It is obvious that solely financial profit was Mr Heymann's motives in setting up Naxos. His record policy is based on booking second- or third-rate musicians, paying them very little, selling his product as a minimum price and undercutting the market to gain an edge on his competitors.

"He has been allowed to get away with this at a time when the arts are in crisis world-wide. I rather think that music lovers will still be listening to great artists like Domingo and Callas in 20 or 30 years' time. The reason is simple: these artists were paid the proper fees for the recordings and the public will always be prepared to pay for quality."

A.Smith, by email
Published in 'Letters', BBC Music Magazine, April, 2001

Klaus Heymann replies: "I was sorry to learn that Mr. Smith does not like many of the Naxos recordings. I am sure most BBC Music Magazine readers have a different opinion. I understand that 35% of them named Naxos as the label they buy most frequently.

"Regarding my motives for setting up Naxos, financial profit was not one of them. If I had invested the $45,000,000 which I put into building my Naxos and Marco Polo catalogues, and all the educational projects we are developing, in real estate or shares I would be very rich indeed. Like my colleagues at Hyperion, Chandos, BIS, and CPO, to name only a few, we are in the business of classical music because we love and not to make money.

"I am sure many people will agree that our artists are as good or better than any on a major label. On average we pay them as much as other independent labels, and even the former major players nowadays pay their artists (with the exception of a few superstars) considerably less than during the boom years.

"Perhaps the musical arts are in crisis because a very small group of artists are paid exorbitant fees, at the expense of other musicians."

Dear Sir,

I would like to congratulate you on your quite outstanding Bruckner cycle by Tintner ( alas, no longer with us ). The last 3 works ( ie. 7th to 9th ) are truly great, especially the Ninth. Rank high on anybody's list.

"As I type this I am sitting listening to the new Naxos Nostalgia series CD, released this week, of vintage Mantovani recordings taken from the original British Decca 78s

Two members of 78-L were involved in this issue - David Lennick and Graham Newton. I have been eagerly awaiting it for some time as I already have the two Vocalion CDs containing similar Mantovani material despite the fact that I am very unhappy about the 'Vocalion Process' stereo reverberation which Vocalion's owner, Michael Dutton, insists on plastering all over anything he releases.

As quite a number of tracks are duplicated it is now possible to check just what effect Mr. Dutton's 'process' has. The answer, in my view, can be summed in in one word - 'devastating'. I normally listen to Vocalion issues in the mono mode which does much to alleviate the unpleasant reverberation but it is now apparent that rather more mutilation of the original sound takes place. The Vocalion issues, while giving the impression of having an extended frequency response, actually have a very 'thin' sound compared with the original and I fear that I am now going to find listening to them even less pleasurable now that I have heard these Naxos transfers.

In Britain Vocalion CDs receive eulogistic reviews which enthuse about their audio quality and several have referred glowingly to the 'added ambience' which Michael Dutton claims improves on the original sound. Indeed, I have never seen one adverse comment about how they sound so am I alone in my view that trying to 'enhance' vintage mono recordings such as these in this way is not only undesirable but results in inferior sound? In Vocalion's defence it has to be said that, thanks to them, literally dozens of CDs of material which would not otherwise have seen the light of day again are now freely available at very modest cost but surely if more ambience was felt necessary it could have been mono reverberation, carefully matched to the original sound?

Stereo reverb is even added to Vocalion CD's of Robert Farnon, Frank Chacksfield and Ray Martin made from mono master tapes licensed from British Decca and EMI. In this case, where we are talking about modern recordings, is it not somewhat arrogant to assume that one can improve on the carefully crafted efforts of the original conductors, producers and engineers who presumably went to some trouble to lay down on tape exactly the sound they wanted?

As one who dabbles in audio restoration myself I can only congratulate David and Graham on a job very well done (and all for under six pounds!)"

"Dear Naxos,

I would like to congratulate you again on some of your recordings which I have purchased lately, namely the Elgar Piano Quintet and String Quartet, Elgar Symphonies (incl. third), Dvorak Trios, Saint-Saens Trios, Bax Symphonies, Bax chamber music (especially beautiful), Schumann Trios, Field Piano Concerti and solo piano volumes and The Beatles Go Baroque. I am very pleased with everything about these purchases - they are all outstanding! Particularly wonderful is the Elgar Piano Quintet. This is one of my favourite pieces and the superb performance on your disc surpasses any version I have heard before.

May I ask you a favour? Another piece I love, and one that is neglected by the record companies, is the Frank Bridge Piano Quintet. This is a most beautiful piece - full of exquisite melody, deep emotion and gorgeously arranged. There are also several string quartets in addition to the one you have already recorded which would couple well. A CD of these, performed by the Maggini Quartet/Peter Donohoe, would make a superb addition to the Naxos Catalogue and fit in well with your aims, I feel. I am sure many music lovers would jump to have the Bridge Quintet alongside the Elgar and Vaughan Williams chamber music recordings you have so successfully issued recently. I haven't heard the Vaughan Williams Quartet release as I haven't seen it in the shops yet, but am very much looking forward to having it!

Thank you for everything, and thank heaven for Naxos!"

[Naxos's reply: Thank you for your message, and for your kind and generous comments about some of our recent releases. I see that you're aware of our CD of Frank Bridge Quartets, with the Maggini Quartet (8.553718). We also have in preparation a CD of Bridge piano music. And I'm sure we'll get to the Piano Quintet in due course -- perhaps coupled with some of the remaining quartet repertoire.]

"Dear Marco Polo:

I just listened to The Treasure of the Sierra Madre...absolutely brilliant--and I'm comparing it to the original tape I have from the Steiner Society. This recording made by Polo is just exquisite. Really captures the Steiner Sound. And best of all, it is in film chronological order. This is not the case on the tape from the Society. Plus there is the hiss and scratch of the original acetate record. It is a pleasure to hear it as it was made to be heard. Thank you for this recording and all of the Marco Polo releases.

Question: I hear from the grapevine that the Maltese Falcon is going to be recorded and released by Polo. Any idea as if it will be this year?

It is so nice to hear the 'continuation of the Romantic period in these film scores. As a classical music enthusiast, my hat's off to your company for creating legends that others can hear who may not have listened to them before.

A happy listener and follower of Marco Polo's works. Keep 'em coming!!"

"Hello to all at Naxos,

I have rarely enjoyed a recording as much as the Brouwer Guitar Music Vol. 1. Are there plans for further volumes? I think it's very important to get more of his pieces recorded and distributed. Please let me know what's in store for this series.

grateful listner,

[Thanks for your message, and for your kind and generous comments.

You'll be happy to learn that we plan to release the complete (up until now) guitar works of Leo Brouwer. Volume 2 is scheduled for release in November, and Volume 3 has been recorded and is in the pipeline.]

"Very much enjoyed your release of Finzi's beautiful music.... I hope you will follow with more of his work on disc. I would especially welcome a version of his Magnificat with string orchestra. His St. Cecelia has also been absent too long from record catalogues.

For that matter I have enjoyed a number of your new and recent recordings- the Howard Hanson series you have begun is excellent.

More please."

The disc is scheduled for release in October. We also expect to release all of the remaining Hanson symphonies.]

"Dear Sir,

I would like to add mine to the list of compliments you are receiving on the fine line of Naxos recordings, particularly the American Composers' series. I was thrilled to find your recent releases of works by Piston, Creston, Foote, Antheil and others.

While I look forward to future issues, such as the Strong Orchestral Works, Volumes 2 & 3, which I understand are due soon, I would hope that future releases might include additional works by the above named composers. Might we expect the balance of the Creston and Antheil Symphonies? Is there any hope of a complete Piston Symphony cycle? His Third is currently not available on any label that I am aware of, and newer performances are desperately needed for most of the remaining seven. Might there be recordings of any works by Chadwick, Paine, or Bristow?

Apart from the American Series, I am eagerly awaiting the first of the
Miaskovsky Symphony recordings, and hope that many more will follow, quickly!"

[Naxos replies: Thank you for your message, and for your kind and generous comments.

I'm sure you can understand that a company like ours would be torn between the desire to build a catalogue as broad as possible, and one that goes into as much depth as possible. We tread a fine line here.

Future issues of Creston and Antheil will likely depend on sales of the first ones, which in effect are trial balloons. As for a Piston cycle, we expect to have the complete symphonies rather soon (and, of course, we don't as a rule delete titles). And we recorded a Chadwick disc just last week, that includes a world premiere recording.

And our most recent Miaskovsky (24 & 25, with the Moscow Philharmonic) will be outstanding!"]

"You may like to know that I have been an enthusiastic Naxos supporter since your CDs first arrived in local shops (Woolworth Stores, initially!) well over a decade ago, and have been delighted to see how your catalogue has grown and diversified in that time. I have included quite a few of your CDs, cassettes, minidiscs, and now DVDs in my collection. Interesting also to note how well many of them have been reviewed in the prestigious 'Penguin Guide', despite indifference and even hostility in the early days, from some retail groups and music magazines....

Please keep up the good work in the interests of top-class audio and video for the general music-lover, and best wishes for future success."

"Dear Sir/Madam,

I have been buying CDs from the Naxos classical range for some years now and, thanks to your policy of recording works by lesser known composers, I am now able to enjoy music of remarkable quality by the likes of Berwald and Weiss - like most other people, I had never heard of them - at a very affordable price. (I must say your Ryba recordings were a stroke of genius.) Your range certainly give the lie to the notion that music can only be enjoyed if listening to one of the 'great' composers performed by the 'great' artists - preferably after paying through the nose for the CD.

My purpose in writing is, however, to raise the matter of a composer who has not yet appeared in your range. I recently returned from Lithuania with various tapes and CDs by their favourite musical son Ciurlionis (1875-1911).

This man seems usually to be described as a 'Romantic' or, more obscurely, a 'mystic'. However, he does seem to have a style all his own. He wrote, among other things, symphonic poems, large amounts of piano music and even collected and arranged folk songs for performance by choirs (with minimal interference in the musical content). I don't know enough about music to judge the influences in his piano works but, during his brief life, he seems to have moved from the expected hint of Chopin through Impressionism and beyond. What I will say is that the first work I heard by Ciurlionis was his String Quartet (on a rather ropey Lithuanian tape). My instant reaction was to wonder why I had never heard this before.

One other interesting thing about Ciurlionis was that he was an artist and tried to synthesise his music and art. This leads to rather strange titles of paintings like "Sonata No.5 (Sea Sonata) Allegro". Probably saves a lot of work when looking for a cover design!
I hope one day you will be able to add Ciurlionis to your list of composers and bring yet another 'minor' figure to the wider attention they deserve. To my half-trained ear, he certainly seems to have a lot that is original to offer.

In the meanwhile, just keep the fascinating CDs coming."

"Dear Sirs:

Browsing your site I was surprised and the brevity (and incorrectness in part) of the entry from Virgil Thompson's Four Saints in Three Acts. I also wonder at the omission of his second G. Stein opera, The Mother of Us All.

Another hole in the collection is Corigliano's Ghosts of Versailles, together with his omission from your composer section."

[Editor's reply: I have to agree with you about the wording of the reference to Four Saints in Three Acts in our Thomson biography and for the brevity of the article. Rather than making minor adjustments, however, I believe we will want to provide a new and more comprehensive Thomson biography as soon as possible. As for Corigliano, we haven't yet recorded any of his works but that is no excuse for not having a biographical page for a musician of his stature. We will add him in the next round of new articles.]

It is increasingly difficult to find gaps in the Naxos catalogue. You cover Czech music particularly well, with many fine recordings to your credit. Smetana is a pivotal figure in Czech music, and half of his work was for the piano. This repertory is not well-covered by other companies and as yet there are no Naxos discs. Are you considering recording some of Smetana's piano works in the future?

I'm sure you can find an excellent pianist for Smetana, so I wouldn't want to influence your choice, but I would like to say how much I appreciate the Thomas Hlawatsch recordings of Janacek's piano works.

Thanks for a good website, and a nearly comprehensive catalogue!

I have just about all of the excellent series of Marcel Dupre's organ and enjoy them all. The organ is not the easiest of instruments to record but you have managed admirably to capture the complete tonal spectrum. I have particularly enjoyed performances on the instruments constructed by Casavant and Fisk, the Canadian and American builders.

I wonder, though, if you could not feature some of the excellent though rarely recorded British organs in the UK. Beverley Minster (Snetzler//Hill/Hill, Norman & Beard) and Bridlington Priory (Annessens, Compton, Nicholson), plus St John's, Ranmoor, Sheffield (Brindley & Foster/Nicholson/Wells) are three very fine organs on which any of the great organ works would sound truly magnificent.

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is where I send my kudos, but I wanted to be sure to let someone at Naxos know just how impressed I was with the first two releases in the Caruso Edition. Ward Marston has done another outstanding job with the transfers--it's a joy to hear the sound of Caruso's voice, without all of the "swish-swish" one usually encounters with recordings of that era... Keep up the excellent work!

Can I say how much I have enjoyed my purchase of the "Santa Claus" Symphony and other works by William Fry. They sound like a mixture of Liszt, Wagner, Verdi and Gottschalk and the all the better for it. Can I urge you to try and dig up some more of his music.

Have you considered recording the complete symphonies of Hovanhess? He seems to be gaining popularity, perhaps because he writes tunes!

Congratulations on your web site. It is the only one that I know of which allows you to listen to any item in the catalogue as means of deciding whether to buy. If only the big 4 music companies could match this.

Hello to all at Naxos,

I write to express my greatest appreciation to you all at the Naxos enterprise, especially for the recent American Classics project, which in my opinion may turn out to be regarded as this label's greatest contribution to classic music in future days. I have several of the discs in this series - Piston's Violin Concertos, Hanson's Nordic symphony, and most recently, Samuel Jones' Roundings- and I hope that you will continue to record music written by American composers and use American orchestras. By doing so, you will progressively dismantle one of classical music's longest held falsehoods: that there has been little to any good classical music written in the United States and that there are few American orchestras good enough to match their counterparts in Europe. In a country large as large and diverse as ours, that is simply untenable.

I hope to hear more from the Amarillo Symphony orchestra and the Nashville Symphony; perhaps you could record with talented, but lesser known groups like the Harrisburg Symphony in Pennsylvania or others in a similar status? Your label demonstrates on a daily basis that very fine classical music is made outside of Berlin, Vienna, London, and New York. I cannot overemphasize how pivotal I believe your efforts may be in keeping classical music from dying a long, slow death caused by over-priced recordings of the same 50 or so symphonies/concertos by the same orchestras who swap jet-set conductors for each new production.

I'd like to put my vote in for more late 19th-century American music, a la Arthur Foote and others. How about a few of his symphonies, for example, with an American orchestra? I intend to purchase every American Classics CD my wife will let me buy, so keep them coming and remember that consumers will always find reasonable prices and top-quality products affordable - you should already know that, though!

I find Naxos a good product; not only because of it's price, but it's very well recorded... I started to like classical music because of Naxos, and now I am very proud to buy naxos classical products. In fact, my last 2 CDs were Boismortier ballades (10/10 classical today) and F. Poulenc ( 10/10 as well). I also like the French pamphlets about the life of the composer because, of course, I am French-Canadian. So, enjoy !

Long may you prosper

"Just a few lines to express my appreciation for the interesting magazine Naxos News. I look forward to receiving the booklet and the sampler CD, what an excellent way to introduce us to new avenues of enjoyment!

I must say that although I love classical music, I have found the other labels in the Naxos range exciting. My choice would be Naxos World--very good! Then Naxos Jazz--new for me, but good! Then Naxos Audiobooks--excellent!

The Naxos company should be proud of its achievement of producing good CDs at a low purchasing price for its customers. Keep up the good work!

Best wishes to you all"

In Glasgow on Thursday last I heard James Buswell play the Barber Violin Concerto with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Marin Alsop. The programme note indicated that this work is being recorded this weekend by Naxos and that the same composer's Cello Concerto with Wendy Warner as the soloist is due for release soon. Naxos is to be commended for championing the cause of Barber, one of the most neglected of American composers. His music is worthy of revival. Rather than produce a long list of wants let me say that I am so impressed with the quality of the performances in the American Classics series that I will be buying whatever you record. If I can however enter a plea-it is time for a reappraisal of Leonard Bernstein as a composer and I can think of no better advocate than Marin Alsop. It is good to see the Royal Scottish National Orchestra emerge as a leading recording orchestra-thanks in no small measure to your employment of them in many recent recordings. The only thing which is better than having Naxos recordings of this major orchestra is being able to hear them live at the Royal Concert Hall in their home city of Glasgow.

Hello!

I have been an avid music listener and record collector for 40 years and I have to tell you that your recordings are simply outstanding. I love exploring the byways - little-known composers and rarely-heard works by famous ones - and now that you have covered the basic repertoire the rarities are simply unbelievable; I've got scores of Naxos recordings and I have bought a dozen in the last week, many of which contain works I thought I'd never ever hear; Berwald's Duos, MacDowell's Cello Romance, Strong's symphony, Vieuxtemps' Violin Concertos 1 and 3, Moeran's E flat quartet - the list is huge, the quality of recording magnificent and the performances exceptional. These would be bargains at full price but at five pounds each they are unbelievable value. While the major labels are laying off artists, pandering to the populists and complaining that they are on the verge of disappearing, Naxos is healthy and exceptionally productive. You also go for completeness and include every available fragment, and unlike the so-called major labels you encourage scores of young and exceptionally gifted artists. May I wish you the best of luck in the future!
Now a suggestion - how about a CD devoted to the orchestral works of Jaromir Weinberger (of Schwanda the Bagpiper fame). His Christmas Overture was broadcast recently and his Variations on Under the Spreading Chestnut Tree are wonderfully attractive - but both are available only on very ancient mono recordings from the 78s era. How about it Naxos?

Kindest regards,
H. Goldberg

RE: Schostakovich's 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op.87 (8.554745-46)

Dear Naxos

I had no idea Naxos had plans to release this work so soon and I was very excited to see the announcement in November. I welcome it very much and I suspect after having listened to it that Konstantin Scherbakov has offered new insights into this magnificent composition by one of the greatest 20 th century composers. I have recordings by Nikolayeva (dedicatee), Jarrett, Ashkenazy and by the Composer himself and I am certain this one more than measures up. This, however, is a recording that the critics are going to dissect under a microscope, as it were. I am certain it will survive.

Thank you, Naxos, for helping, in no small way, to make this piece known among music lovers.

Sincerely,

Dear Sir!

Isn't life such a wonderful thing? Why so, you may ask. Because of Naxos. It is soon 10 yrs since I found this love of mine, and you must believe me when I tell you that this love of mine is just getting deeper every year. For a classical CD collector Naxos is a dream come true. Superb recordings, ever widening repertoire, amazing artists, and finally the price of the CD's. Who could ask for more! I have a few hundred Naxos CD's and I am totally satisfied. This is true classical bliss. There is no need to purchase DG/Decca/EMI etc. when we have Naxos, state of art recordings and totally satisfying CD's at such a modest cost. This is what makes a cold/dark winter day up here in the north so happy and fulfilling. It is Naxos. Thank you SO much!

Of course I also have your site in my favorites links and check is almost every day. I also look forward to your annual catalog, and promptly pick one up when they are available. It's wonderful to see that there is such a wide variety of music you offer, especially the more difficult compositions that once were hard to find. I also have to thank your web designers. For years I been buying Classical CDs from the big record houses, but a few years ago I got in touch with Naxos, at first I didn't trust the label because my previous experience with low price CDs e.g. Laserlight, but after I got my first Naxos CDs I found out that the quality was above other recordings, also I found a variety of composers and works, that makes not an other choice, but the choice e.g. Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, that is a superb recording, even better than others from very known directors.

I hope to be in touch with you and in further opportunities to write you and congratulate you for the work you have done with the interpretation of the classical repertory.

Truly yours

Naxos does itself no end of good by having so much of its music available to hear online in good-quality stereo. It goes to prove that this label has nothing to hide and that it can trumpet its strengths with confidence. So sad that some other labels are content either to keep silent or simply to offer us small fragments in a dreary mono. Well done Naxos! It's good to know what we're getting upfront.

Dear Sir, Madam,
I have now been buying Naxos [CDs] for several years and [my] Naxos collection is a couple of hundred CDs in number (still a minor part of the total). But the purchases during the last year have almost invariably been Naxos. To start with some secondary reasons: good price/performance. Also really good recordings since middle 553 series, barring exceptions). Prime reason: Naxos snatches music from the jaws of oblivion, in contrast to the 'top brands', which just re-re-issue the iron repertoire. Just to mention some composers: Sor (where are 6-9???) Kraus (really excellent CDs in music, performance and recording), Hummel, Coste (Pavel Steidl is an excellent guitarist, also with Legnani), Legnani (more wanted, fascinating range of musical expression), Grieg (full series of piano music), Leopold Hofmann, Glazoenow, Clementi .... (more on request.)
Real musical enjoyment. Thanks.

Listening to that recording has given me hours of pleasure and will continue to do so as I hear once again Bidu Sayao and Lawrence Tibbett, those two well-loved singers.
Again, many heartfelt thanks for that special recording of my favorite opera.

Sincerely,
M. Cobb, New York, NY

Webmaster,
I think your site is one of the best I have ever visited. It is clear, concise, colorful and very easy to navigate. I enjoyed listening to the music and appreciated using Windows Media Player without having to download alternate media software. Some of the web pages for the classical selections are not available.

Thanks, SR, in the USA November 20, 2000

It's a great pleasure to know about Naxos Records--one of the best Early, Renaissance and Baroque music labels and one of the finest classic music choices. Naxos is a wonderful label--at the price Naxos CDs go for, they often invite you to explore new repertoire and take a chance. The recordings of standard repertoire are worth the money. You also release a lot of stuff others stay away from. Naxos has come a long way with many wonderful recordings, and I just wish you the best for the future. Just keep 'em coming!
Thank you very much

Sincerely yours and the best regards,
ARD, Buenos Aires, Argentina, November 16, 2000

I congratulate Naxos on making available such a wide range of symphonic, orchestral, chamber, ballet, opera, and instrumental works by so many composers. Many of these composers really seems to be dug up out of the archives. I think there must a managerial team dedicated to bringing such music to life for everyday people who just enjoy music.

P. M. Joubert, South Africa, November 13, 2000

Just got this recording today and want to express my gratitude to Naxos. Delightful singing and wonderful instrumental performances. Maybe it's time to replace the croaking voices of the Scholars Baroque group with Aradia.

Sincerely, D. Boddington, November 13, 2000

I'm a Spanish fan of Naxos for several and obvious reasons, but after visiting your web I'm really fascinated. It's a great idea and means a new reason for supporting your company. My congratulations as this web is simple, efficient (which means it has been long time studied, bur the efforts were worth while), so thanks again and only one petition: your catalogue is simply incredible, but it should be georgius if Naxos incuded Latinoamerican repertoire (I'm talking about Mexican Revueltas quators, Ginastera, Chavez, etc etc). It is a richness treasure to discover for the rest of the world. Congratulations also for your Spanish catalogue which includes odd pieces actually out of catalogue and very difficult to find even in Spain.

I have just come across a fantastic recording. It is called Szymanowski Piano works Vol. 2 as played by Martin Roscoe, Piano. I would like information and prices about ordering the entire set. Has it been completed yet? You are to be commended yet again for a fantastic job at bringing great performances of this little known composers work to the public at a great price. These works are full of charm, wit, depth and power. The performance is perfect. I look forward to hearing about the entire set and you have a new fan for life!

I bought the Muck Parsifal set a month or two back and just wanted to say that this is about the most wonderful issue of a CD set that I have encountered. The sound is much better than any previous issue I have heard and the performances of course enshrine possibly the finest Wagner conducting ever (I say this as a Furtwangler addict).

- A. Barnsdale, August 12, 2000

I've been a major fan of NAXOS for many years and have bought innumerable disks. But your Historical Series has really knocked me and my friends out.

- W. A. Rosen, USA, August 7, 2000

I can only congratulate you for the wonderful work you do, especially the American Classics series is very exciting and full of unknown, interesting works.

- P. Vanderputte, Belgium, August 4, 2000

Over the last five years I have purchased well in excess of one hundred Naxos CDs. They constitute the backbone of my collection and are a source of endless pleasure and delight. All who contribute to this marvellous innovation in recording and marketing music of quality deserve the highest praise.

- W. Johnson, Australia, August 3, 2000

You are making available to us good recordings of music by many composers whose works are not otherwise represented in the catalogue. It's something of a miracle that you are able to maintain such a low retail price on these CDs.

- S. H. P., Australia, July 18, 2000

Just wanted to pass on some good feedback. I really enjoy the naxosus.com and main hnh.com web sites. I have purchased many Naxos recordings over the last year or two...some through stores but many online via Amazon.

Anyway, the Naxos web sites have been great to introduce me to new releases and to sample music - this has helped introduce me to new recordings and composers.

I continue to be a happy Naxos customer. Thanks for all the great recordings (at a reasonable cost) and thanks for the great web sites, e-mail newsletter, and I even got a sampler in mail this week!

I'm now visiting your site daily. It's become a morning routine to check the news and latest reviews at ClassicsToday - very useful connection, this. Not to mention Norman Lebrecht's articles. Magisterial!

The Stromberg film series is perhaps yet another of Marco Polo's greatest triumphs.

- S. A. Kennedy, June 30, 2000

The Naxos webpage is superb.

- C. Morrow, USA, June 29, 2000

Your American Masters series is excellent - it's wonderful to have a label devoted to American music, and it is doubly welcome because it showcases rare and unfamiliar repertoire.

- C. Lees, UK, June 29, 2000

How wonderful to come across such a lovely glossary online!!

- L. T. Davis, June 28, 2000

I must admit I was skeptical.  After all, nobody I knew had ever heard of most of the performers you feature, and I couldn't find any reviews. The price looked too good to be true, so I thought it probably was. But I received a copy of the Haydn string quartets Opus 20 from a friend and was amazed at the quality of the performance and recording.  I now have over twenty of your CDs, and will definitely purchase more.

 American Classics

Dear Naxos,

I just wanted to thank you for this series. The latest release, volume 1 of the orchestral works of Samuel Barber, exceeded all my expectations. Marin Alsop is a real find: a conductor of real stature with genuine insight into the music. She obviously knows and loves this music and is able to highlight details often overlooked without making those details sound precious or sacrificing the composition's architecture. I believe I have heard every recording of these pieces ever recorded and the performances on this disc rank with the very best not only in terms of sound, but also conducting and orchestral performance.

This is the first recorded performance of the First Essay for Orchestra I have heard that maintains tension throughout instead of falling into a number of shorter sections. I can hardly wait to hear Alsop's performance of the Second Essay and, finally, a new recording of the Toccata Festiva. It will also be fascinating to hear what Alsop makes of Die Natalis and the Third Essay, music that up till now seems to be much more diffuse than Barber's better-known works.

I hope you have plans to make new recordings of symphonies by Howard Swanson, Ulysses S. Kay, William Schuman, Roy Harris, Walter Piston, etc., etc., etc. and the dance-oriented orchestral works of Paul Creston. Discs devoted to the choral works of Randall Thompson, Daniel Pinkham, Jean Berger, Gordon Binkerd, Virgil Thomson, BOTH choral works by Walter Piston, A Free Song by William Schuman, etc., etc., etc. would also be very welcome. Chamber music by Paul Creston and Quincy Porter? ALL of the string quartets by William Schuman? The list is endless. Your work outside American music is also beyond praise. Has anyone considered a recording of music by the inexplicably almost completely overlooked Baroque French composer and theorbist Francois Campion? His music is very attractive. Again, I owe you more gratitude than I could possibly express.

Sincerely,

- J.R., USA, June 17, 2000

I am a big fan of "NAXOS" music. I've been so since last year.  I buy 3 or 4 per week the sound is impeccable and so is the price it serves my budget really now I posess about 200 plus NAXOS CD's and counting.

- R. Vaillancourt, June 15, 2000

Naxos is a wonderful label....at the price Naxos CDs go for, they often invite you to explore new repertoire and take your chances. Their recordings in standard often covered repertoire...are worth their money. They also release a lot of stuff others stay away from. Naxos has come a long way with many wonderful recordings, and I just wish them the best for the future. Just keep 'em coming!

I'd like to express my appreciation of what you folks are doing. Offering very good performances and good-to-very-good recordings at a very fair price is no small achievement. I also really appreciate your desire and effort to educate people. The liner notes in your CDs are informative. The information in the "learning zone" of your web page is also very useful, especially to a classical music novice like myself. Finally, I've found your collections (start-up kits etc) very useful for identifying composers and kinds of music that I like a lot. Keep up the fantastic work.

- A., U.S.A., June 13, 2000

I just needed to say thanks as I find my music collection fast filling up with more and more of your wonderful recordings. I think that it is about half of my collection and considering how large it is that in itself is amazing. But more so than this is how often I turn to these recordings and run to the shelves looking first and foremost for what you people have put out.

I am a lute and guitar player and your series of releases of music in both fields has left me in a daze. The inspiration I have drawn from these discs leaves me at a loss to express my gratitude. Simply wonderful!

Also I have been fast filling in the education of music history with your discs. Where else can I go to find such an eclectic lot?

I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate the great work and let you know that my continued purchases of your CDs seem the very least I can do. You people are an exception. Did anyone ever tell you that?

Please keep up the great work...actually, I could envision no less.

With kind regards...All the best to you and yours,

Thank you so much for the late 20th century classical by Nyman, Part, Gorecki, Schnittke and Gubaidulina. On the other end of the time-line, I'm also enjoying your "early music" series, with the Oxford Camerata's recordings of Lassus, Palestrina, Gesualdo and Von Bingen. All are excellent, clean recordings done with great spirit and care.

- V. Spicer, Canada, May 30, 2000

Firt let me say that I am very excited about the NAXOS label. With a very few exceptions, I exclusively buy NAXOS CDs! I don't have to look for recordings from the full price labels. I can just relax and buy afterwards as NAXOS issues one masterwork/master performance after another. It's so simple just to stick to NAXOS.

I read two music magazines: The BBC Music Magazine and Classic CD. In the reviews I find that NAXOS is as good as, and often better than, the full price labels. Mostly I read through the reviews mainly just to look for reviews of NAXOS CDs. I just love it when NAXOS CDs are reviewed and receive good criticisms, and when they receive bad criticisms, I simply do not believe them! :-) In short, I am a "NAXOS fanatic!!!

Again, thank you very much for making classical works available at a fantastic affordable price. (I must have at least 800 NAXOS CD's by now. And I am not planning to stop there. Especially, I appreciate that you are issuing some works not available elsewhere and which are not usually performed by most performers/orchestras (I can't understand why so many most of the time just stick to the more famous "favourites"! There are so many unknown or unrecognized works that really deserve recording/performance!)

Your label is simply excellent!!!!

- H. Evensen, May 29, 2000

Congratulations for your beautiful catalog! I have more than 200 CD Naxos, which is more than a half of my whole classical collection. Please, go on with the same philosophy.

- P. De SantisItaly, Italy, May 29, 2000

I was pleased to find your recent CD of highlights from The Marriage of Figaro, by Mozart. Wonderful.

- D. L. Huntley, May 25, 2000

It is always a pleasure to listen to NAXOS/Marco Polo CD, no doubt they are the BEST! For the quality of the performances, the quality of the sound, the vastly available titles, and... the price. Be sure that I'll follow all your new editions...

- T. Virgili, May 25, 2000

Thank you for your fascinating catalogue, and in particular, your historical recordings series... Your Wagner operas are wonderful! The Muck "Parsifal" is sensational, and it's marvelous to have Schorr's Wotan available.

- M. A. Cully, Australia, May 17, 2000

I found your URL from a CD that I recently purchased. I have been exploring the Learning Zone and have found it exceptionally helpful. The site is very well done.
